"Who Chose the Darkness"

[Friday, August 7, 2015]

Shiv saw the goth couple
come into his section of
the restaurant and stared.

Blues Moon didn't get a lot
of goths, but sometimes
they still wandered in.

The man was tall and slim
with long straight black hair.
He wore a lot of black leather
and silk, tricked out with chains,
spikes, and a skeletal hand
in carefully crafted steel.

The woman was shorter
and curvier with indigo eyes.
Her black hair looked like it
had been shellacked into place
under a delicate silver tiara.

She wore a dress of black lace
and a double necklace of pearls.
The clasps on her bodice were
steel with more pearls, and she
had silver chains lacing the back.

"Hi, I'm Shiv and I'll be your server
today," he said as he seated them.

"I'm Timour and this is Naenia,"
said the man. "Welcome to
the weird names club."

Shiv laughed. "I could
make the weird clothes club
if I wasn't at work," he said.
"You should see my T-shirts."

"My favorite is Normal people
have no idea how beautiful
the darkness is,"
said Naenia.

"I have one that reads, If I
wanted to kill myself, I'd climb
your ego and jump to your IQ,"

Timour said with a smirk.

"Now I want one," Shiv said.

He couldn't resist sneaking out
his superpower, just a little,
to feel all that metal.

And they both jumped.

"What was that?" Naenia said.
"Everything metal on me
suddenly moved."

"Yeah, I felt it too,"
Timour added.

"Uh ... that was me,"
Shiv confessed, taking out
his bismuth fidget. "I can
control metal, and sharp things."

"Wicked!" they chorused.

"Sorry, folks, I shouldn't have
groped yours," Shiv said.
"There's just so much of it,
and some of it's real fancy."

"Well, we wear it to be
admired," Timour said,
waving a hand at himself.
"What caught your eye?"

"Not the look of it, the feel,"
Shiv said. "There's like
these flashy bits on some
of the pieces, notches, and
something like a touchmark
all over them as well."

"That is my touchmark,"
Timour said. "I made most of
what we're wearing. Some have
notches to catch the light, and
the chains have a touchmark
on every link for texture."

"I am in awe," Shiv said.
"I do metalwork too, and I'd
never have the patience to do
every damn link like that."

"Then here," Timour said
as he stripped off two of
his chains, and then Naenia
produced a leather bracelet
with spikes from her purse.

Shiv was so startled -- and
still fascinated by the metal --
that he let them dress him up in it.

They were discreet, more or less,
just draping the long chains from
his belt loops, and the bracelet
had spikes short enough to hide
under his shirtsleeve until he
stretched and it peeked out.

"Thanks," Shiv said. "This
is all so awesome."

"Well, tell folks where
you got it," Timour said,
handing him a business card
that read Death Mettle. "You're
our first superhero client."

"Uh, I'm not a super...hero,"
Shiv said, looking away.

"Wicked!" they said again.

"I should get back on track,"
Shiv said. "Do you know what
you want, or do you want menus?"

"What do you have that's black
or red?" Naenia asked him.

Shiv blinked. He got all kinds
of weird requests, though.

"Red: heirloom tomato salad,
Southern ham and beans, or
red drink," he said. "Black:
black beans and brown rice,
or any 'blackened' meat."

"Red drink," they both said,
then Timour added, "I'll have
the Southern ham and beans."

"Blackened chicken and
heirloom tomato salad,
please," said Naenia.

"Coming right up," Shiv said,
and headed for the kitchen.

After he placed their orders,
he circled his other tables, but
there was nobody else new and
the others were busy eating.

So he returned to the goths.

Naenia had taken her tiara off
to fuss with her hair, which
moved all in one piece."

"That is fucked up,"
Shiv said without thinking.
"Oops, sorry, I'm not supposed
to talk like that in the restaurant."

Timour laughed. "Don't worry,
man, your tip is safe with us.
You're the least boring waiter
that we've had all month."

"So what's up with your hair?"
Shiv asked Naenia.

"It's the heat," she said.
"My hair gel is melting."

"That's why I never
use the stuff," Shiv said.

"Yeah, right," Naenia said.
"Your emo hair behaves perfectly."

Shiv laughed. "Hell, no," he said.
"I couldn't do a thing with it if I didn't
weigh it down with shea butter,"
he said, fishing some out of
his pocket. "You wanna try it?"

He had started carrying tiny tins
of the stuff to share with customers
who didn't have any, because every time
it rained, anyone with nappy hair would
clog up the dotties trying to fix theirs.

"I'm tempted, but that would never be
enough for all my hair," Naenia said.

"Nope," Shiv said. "Use a tiny bit.
I put just enough to make my hands
tacky. You'd only need a little more."

"Really?" she said dubiously.

"Should work," Shiv said. "Go in
the dottie and rinse out the gel,
then put on a dab of shea butter.
I started carrying it for folks who
came in wet from the rain."

"Worth a try," Naenia said,
taking the tin from him.

While Shiv was doing that,
he made another loop, bringing
dessert to another couple.

Then the goths' order
came up, so he brought it.

Naenia was back, and
her damp hair was behaving.
"You are a genius," she said.

"I'm happy to help," Shiv said.
"Here's your supper. Enjoy."

"Oh, this amazing," Naenia said.
"This is the best tomato salad
I have ever put in my mouth."

"Thanks," Shiv said. "I
found the heirlooms at
the farmer's market."

Timour was too busy
shoveling ham and beans
into his face to comment.

Shiv just chuckled
and moved along.

There was a family of
five to seat and take
drink orders from, then
someone else wanted
to order desserts.

Shiv was busy for
a while, then returned
to check on his goths.

"We want dessert,"
Naenia said, grinning.

"Dark chocolate sheet cake
or Red Hots apple pie," Shiv said,
anticipating their next request.

"Red Hots," Timour said at
the same time Naenia said,
"I want dark chocolate."

"I'll be right back with those,"
Shiv said, hurrying away.

He grabbed the desserts
and came right back. "Here,"
he said. "I'd warn you that
these are kinda messy, but
you're both wearing black."

"I almost always wear black,"
Naenia said. "I do counseling
at funeral parlors and such, so I'm
comfortable with the darkness."

"Wow," Shiv said. "That seems
like an odd occupation to choose."

"It wasn't me who chose the darkness,"
Naenia said, "but the other way around."

"Oh," Shiv said, nodding. "Okay, then.
I guess I know what that's like."

"This pie is impressive,"
Timour said. "I love apples,
and the cinnamon punches it up."

"Yeah, I like that one too, but I've
had hotter," Shiv said. "I know a guy
who makes little tartlets filled with
Carolina reaper jelly -- and then
others with cinnamon or ginger,
and they all look alike, so you
never know how hot it'll be."

"Now I want some," Timour said.

"Just find a recipe for jelly tartlets
and put reaper jelly in them," Shiv said.
"You can buy the stuff or make it."

"We should do that for a goth party,"
Naenia said. "It would be a hit."

Just then, Shiv's vidwatch
beeped a reminder.

"Hey, if you two finish
in the next five minutes,
then you can move into
the room with the stage,"
Shiv said. "My sister's
about to start silk dancing,
and that's a sight to see."

Timour and Naenia looked
at each other, then raced
to finish their desserts.

Shiv tallied the bill.

Timour paid it, and then
tucked a twenty into
Shiv's apron pocket.

"Dude, you already gave
me jewelry, you don't have
to tip me too," Shiv said.

Timour shook his head.
"The jewelry was because
you showed us your superpower,"
he said. "The tip is for your service."

"And finding the heirloom tomatoes,"
Naenia added. "Those were luscious."

"Thanks," Shiv said. He showed them
into the room where stagehands
were setting up Luci's rig.

"That looks different,"
Timour said, sitting down.

"Sometimes you have to be
your own kind of beautiful,"
Naenia said as she joined him.

"Yeah," Shiv said. "That's
pretty good advice."

Entrepreneurship & Marketing
at Metropolitan Community College (Elkhorn Valley Campus)

Entrepreneurship serves a very important role in the U.S. economy. Business start-ups develop, organize and manage new ventures where the purpose is to make a profit in compensation for the assumed risk. Some entrepreneurship opportunities involve entirely new products and services whereas others focus on packaging and marketing existing goods and services in a new or unique way. Typically starting out as small businesses, these organizations contribute to the overall number of jobs and vibrancy of the economy.
CAREERS & SALARIES
New business start-ups tend to increase and decrease with the business cycle. Before ever beginning their business, successful entrepreneurs typically have conducted marketing research evaluating market factors such as potential customer base and competition. They also strive to have a good understanding of legal issues that may impact their business including local, state and federal regulations and laws. Financial considerations, including venture capital and taxation are relevant topics to the entrepreneur as well. A good business plan is important to the entrepreneur as they are exploring the feasibility of beginning and growing their business.

Communication Certificate at the University of Nebraska-Omaha
School of Communication, College of Communication, Fine Arts & Media

Vision Statement
The proposed communication graduate certificate program provides potential students who are not interested in a complete MA program the opportunity to expand their knowledge of the discipline or customize their learning towards a specific area of study. This can be helpful for career promotion, professional opportunities, teaching in-discipline at the community college/dual-enrollment level, personal exploration, etc.

Total Number of Hours for Certificate Curriculum:18
The assumption is that the certificate courses are a subset of an existing master’s degree curriculum. Please attach a brief explanation if this is not the case.
Response: For this certificate, any of the 8000/9000 level courses taught within the School of Communication are available for Communication Graduate Certificate students to take as part of their 18 credit hours. As this program is meant for the student to create her/his/their own customized curriculum within the School’s offerings, the only restrictions on courses are the methods courses taught for the MA program students, denoted with * (those courses designated for MA students only; Certificate students who are interested taking a core course may be allowed by permit with instructor permission).
For those students focusing on HLC accreditation (to teach at the Associate’s level or the dual-enrollment level), certain courses will be denoted as “suggested” within promotional materials as they align with those courses being taught at that particular level.
Please complete the below course list.
As the program details, any six (or 18 credit hours) of coursework from the following can be utilized, through advising with the Graduate Program Chair, to complete the program. Other courses not listed but in the catalog (e.g., core courses) might be used with the approval of the GPC and the course instructor.

"It wasn't me who chose the darkness, but the other way around."
-- Xynarah of Nocturnity

Naenia has a T-shirt that reads, Normal people have no idea how beautiful the darkness is.

Timour has a T-shirt that reads, If I wanted to kill myself, I would climb your ego and jump to your IQ.

Enjoy recipes for Black Beans and Brown Rice, Blackened Meat with Blackened Seasoning, Heirloom Tomato Salad, Red Hots Apple Pie, and Dark Chocolate Sheet Cake.

Red drink can be either healthy or unhealthy. Often it's just canned fruit punch or soda such as RosySo. Blues Moon serves a cold summer version based on hibiscus and a warm winter version based on cranberry and pomegranate. They used to carry RosySo but quit after the emulsified corn syrup scandal. Instead they introduced a new batch of nonalcholic mixed drinks to match their red cocktails.

I like the goths. :-)

ps. The link to the "kill myself" t-shirt gets a 404 error :-(

Shiv ought to be able to make some fun chains and things with his power.

and I'd love to see his expression when he encounters an aluminum cast of a fire ant nest. Yes, someone actually decided to kill some fire ants by pouring a crucible of molten aluminum into the nest.

When he dug it out later, it was a kinda neat bit of abstract art. Others have repeated it as it's both effective and environmentally friendly.

Goths are everywhere.. maybe not too many, but we're everywhere. Even Antarctica. [6 months of night, you bet the goths among the researchers volunteer to overwinter.]

and those were good Goths, some get a tad bit pretentious and full of themselves, and then you get people like Timour and Naenia who are fun!

Beautiful, I love it. You see so many "sad goths" and "angry goths" in media and very rarely the actually more populous (per my own anecdotal experience) "fun goths" who just wanna do their thing and watch other people do their things and maybe laugh a little at those who think they have to have a specific thing that isn't actually what they're into. The goths who love like it's an act of rebellion and laugh like it's required for breathing. Those are my goths, the ones who adopt on sight and WILL bite someone if they harm one of theirs, but will also give small kids their jewelry because "hey they gotta start somewhere".

>>In this case, they felt that if Shiv loved the metalwork so much, then of course he should have some.<<

Of course. Because it's common philosophy in the Goth community that "If you need it and I have it and won't die without it, I will of course give or loan it to you because you're Community and we need that shit or we all die." Shiv loves metalwork and very clearly is Good People To Know, gifts are a good way to make him into People We Know, which improves the general Community by including and supporting a valuable member, and since Timour makes the goshdarn stuff it's not like they can't get more.

Now, it isn't that common to think that way on the surface, but in my personal Goth Clan, we live by the underlying motto "any sufficiently advanced self interest is indistinguishable from altruism," and honestly this thought process is under most of how we work. We build our Tribe out of the useful offcasts of society, practice share and share alike because pooling resources and building bonds off the Potlatch method just makes sense, and generally act like crows with a shiny whenever we spot anyone with a new skill. Seriously, scratch any given Goth and you'll either find a frustrated hippy with an aesthetic or an optimistic nihilist chaos-hobo who wants to fix the world because it's funny. Sometimes both!

>>I have added the quotes to the character sheets.<<

Aww, thank you! My Clan is very quippy, I have more where those came from.

One of my favorites, which isn't exactly Goth per se but often repeated is "I licked it, therefore it's mine" with regards to those we've adopted. Many of our newer members come out of bad or distant homes and get wibbly about accepting that we still want them after the initial 'oh shiny' reaction. Our standard response is a mimed lick (or real one if we know they won't freak out) and that line.

Another is "Cum Romae, incendere omnia." Because look, if we're going to be scorned for our association with the Outsider, we might as well associate with the Outsiders who sacked Rome and burned it down. Visigoths for the win!

One that comes with a musical number to explain it is the answer to almost any 'why' question: "I was raised by bats." Delivery is deadpan for best effect, but it does result in immediate singing by all nearby Goths to this song: https://youtu.be/hb7W_cikUp0

Oh I can totally see my goth character Dalia having an experience like this. She's super into gemstones and magical woods, and makes her own wands. Several friends and family own one of her wands, and I can see her being befriended by a gemstone seller who decides that helping Dalia sell wands would be a good idea.

Also the thing about goths taking in castoff people is great and so true. Dalia does the same thing. She didn't have many friends until she turned 12 and went to school, and now she kind of collects them. Especially others who nobody else shows any interest in.
