19. Don’t despair; depave. Working under the banner "free your soil," the Portland, Oregon-based group Depave has been kicking asphalt for a decades, turning unused parking and abandoned lots into community gardens and parks. If you discover an opportunity to literally reclaim your streets, the group has a guide on its website to help get started.

When I was a child in Phoenix in the '60s and '70s, I remember in the summers you could open your windows at night and it would cool down and was nice. Not anymore. It's one giant heat island and you can see summer monsoon storms bearing down on it, they hit that giant blob and either deflect or shatter. Phoenix can go for over a month of triple digit temperatures now.
