Poetry Fishbowl Open!
Feb. 4th, 2020 01:20 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
The Poetry Fishbowl is now CLOSED. Thank you for your time and attention. Please keep an eye on this page as I am still writing.
Starting now, the Poetry Fishbowl is open! Today's theme is "If the devil's nicer than the church folks, then we've got a problem." I will be checking this page periodically throughout the day. When people make suggestions, I'll pick some and weave them together into a poem ... and then another ... and so on. I'm hoping to get a lot of ideas and a lot of poems.
I'll be soliciting ideas for devils, angels, churchgoers, clergy, theologians, deities, children, fish out of water, historians, philosophers, ethicists, activists, heroic leads, antagonists, other people involved in theological conflicts, worshipping, praying, speaking, listening, reading, writing, summoning, banishing, discovering yourself, testing boundaries, creating connections, coming of age, learning what you can (and can't) do, shocking people, changing the world, accomplishing the impossible, recovering from setbacks, returning home, temples, churches, church clubs, spiritual study groups, seminaries, monasteries, convents, charities, finishing schools, other places of worship or spiritual socializing, etiquette, bigotry, religious abuse, clergy sexual abuse, Religious Trauma Syndrome, devil-angel relationships, devil-human relationships, tenets of belief, hypocrisy, virtues, values conflict, moral injury, betrayal, alienation, crisis of faith, rebellion, religious language, the heroic journey, liturgy, personal growth, imprint vulnerability, rites of passage, and poetic forms in particular.
Among my more relevant series for the main theme:
Clay of Life deals in Jewish folklore and religion.
Fiorenza the Wisewoman is Italian historic fantasy with Roman Catholic and Italian folk religions.
Fledgling Grace features angelic and demonic aspects as people develop bird wings.
Frankenstein's Family includes Eastern Orthodox Christianity.
One God's Story of Mid-Life Crisis is about the God of Evil becoming the God of Drunks.
Path of the Paladins presents the human impact of divine disputes.
Polychrome Heroics has characters from many different traditions. Shiv and Turq are two characters who have mentioned religious abuses. The new Rutledge thread has religious issues because the Syrians are mostly Muslims and the Vermont folks are mostly Christians. The theme can also be generalized to supervillains behaving better than superheroes or other socially approved people. That brings in people like Calliope and Vagary.
Or you can ask for something new.

What Is a Poetry Fishbowl?
Writing is usually considered a solitary pursuit. One exception to this is a fascinating exercise called a "fishbowl." This has various forms, but all of them basically involve some kind of writing in public, usually with interaction between author and audience. A famous example is Harlan Ellison's series of "stories under glass" in which he sits in a bookstore window and writes a new story based on an idea that someone gives him. Writing classes sometimes include a version where students watch each other write, often with students calling out suggestions which are chalked up on the blackboard for those writing to use as inspiration.
In this online version of a Poetry Fishbowl, I begin by setting a theme; today's theme is "If the devil's nicer than the church folks, then we've got a problem." I invite people to suggest characters, settings, and other things relating to that theme. Then I use those prompts as inspiration for writing poems.
Cyberfunded Creativity
I'm practicing cyberfunded creativity. If you enjoy what I'm doing and want to see more of it, please feed the Bard. The following options are currently available:
1) Sponsor the Fishbowl -- Here is a PayPal button for donations. There is no specific requirement, but $1 is the minimum recommended size for PayPal transactions since they take a cut from every one. You can also donate via check or money order sent by postal mail. If you make a donation and tell me about it, I promise to use one of your prompts. Anonymous donations are perfectly welcome, just won't get that perk. General donations will be tallied, and at the end of the fishbowl I’ll post a list of eligible poems based on the total funding; then the audience can vote on which they want to see posted.
2) Swim, Fishie, Swim! -- A feature in conjunction with fishbowl sponsorship is this progress meter showing the amount donated. There are multiple perks, the top one being a half-price poetry sale on one series when donations reach $300.

3) Buy It Now! -- Gakked from various e-auction sites, this feature allows you to sponsor a specific poem. If you don't want to wait for some editor to buy and publish my poem so you can read it, well, now you don't have to. Sponsoring a poem means that I will immediately post it on my blog for everyone to see, with the name of the sponsor (or another dedicate) if you wish; plus you get a nonexclusive publication right, so you can post it on your own blog or elsewhere as long as you keep the credits intact. You'll need to tell me the title of the poem you want to sponsor. I'm basing the prices on length, and they're comparable to what I typically make selling poetry to magazines (semi-pro rates according to Duotrope's Digest).
0-10 lines: $5
11-25 lines: $10
26-40 lines: $15
41-60 lines: $20
Poems over 60 lines, or with very intricate structure, fall into custom pricing.
4) Commission a scrapbook page. I can render a chosen poem in hardcopy format, on colorful paper, using archival materials for background and any embellishments. This will be suitable for framing or for adding to a scrapbook. Commission details are here. See latest photos of sample scrapbooked poems: "Sample Scrapbooked Poems 1-24-11"
5) Spread the word. Echo or link to this post on your Dreamwidth, other blog, Twitter, Facebook, Digg, StumbleUpon, or any other social network. Useful Twitter hashtags include #poetryfishbowl and #promptcall. Encourage people to come here and participate in the fishbowl. If you have room for it, including your own prompt will give your readers an idea of what the prompts should look like; ideally, update later to include the thumbnail of the poem I write, and a link to the poem if it gets published. If there is at least one new prompter or donor, I will post an extra freebie poem.
Linkback perk: I have a spare series poem available, and each linkback will reveal a verse of the poem. One person can do multiple links if they're on different services, like Dreamwidth or Twitter, rather than all on LiveJournal. Comment with a link to where you posted. "The Bushfire Shawl" has 10 verses and belongs to Arts and Crafts America.
Additional Notes
1) I customarily post replies to prompt posts telling people which of their prompts I'm using, with a brief description of the resulting poem(s). If you want to know what's available, watch for those "thumbnails."
2) You don't have to pay me to see a poem based on a prompt that you gave me. I try to send copies of poems to people, mostly using the LJ message function. (Anonymous prompters will miss this perk unless you give me your eddress.) These are for-your-eyes-only, though, not for sharing.
3) Sponsors of the Poetry Fishbowl in general, or of specific poems, will gain access to an extra post in appreciation of their generosity. While you're on the Donors list, you can view all of the custom-locked posts in that category. Click the "donors" tag to read the archive of those. I've also posted a list of other donor perks there. I customarily leave donor names on the list for two months, so you'll get to see the perk-post from this month and next.
4) After the Poetry Fishbowl concludes, I will post a list of unsold poems and their prices, to make it easier for folks to see what they might want to sponsor.
5) If donations total $100 by Friday evening then you get a free $15 poem; $150 gets you a free $20 poem; and $200 gets you a free epic, posted after the Poetry Fishbowl. These will usually be series poems if I have them; otherwise I may offer non-series poems or series poems in a different size. If donations reach $250, you get one step toward a bonus fishbowl; four of these activates the perk, and they don't have to be four months in a row. Everyone will get to vote on which series, and give prompts during the extra fishbowl, although it may be a half-day rather than a whole day. If donations reach $300, there will be a half-price sale in one series.
Feed the Fish!
Now's your chance to participate in the creative process by posting ideas for me to write about. Today's theme is "If the devil's nicer than the church folks, then we've got a problem." See above for details. If you manage to recommend a form that I don't recognize, I will probably pounce on it and ask you for its rules. I do have The New Book of Forms by Lewis Turco which covers most common and many obscure forms.
I'll post at least one of the fishbowl poems here so you-all can enjoy it. (Remember, you get an extra freebie poem if someone new posts a prompt or makes a donation, and additional perks at $100-$300 in donations. Linkbacks reveal verses of "The Bushfire Shawl." The rest of the poems will go into my archive for future use.

Prompts
Date: 2020-02-04 07:43 pm (UTC)Bonus squee for Kenzie and the Iron Horses getting involved. Is Sturgis a thing in Terramagne?
Meanwhile, over in another storyline, I bet there are church folks who are still out to get Shaeth as he is busy shedding his former identity -- and giving much nicer than he's getting.

Date: 2020-02-04 09:58 pm (UTC)Yaknow... that's the thing. In just about every story I've ever seen about Old Scratch, he plays by the rules. I mean, sure, there's some lawyerin' goin' on... but if you out-play, out-argue, out-think, or otherwise win the contest with the Big Bad, he will - for the time being, anyway - leave you be. And then there's the tale of Wicked John, who beats the hell (ahem) out of some lesser demons sent to get him to the point where Nick changes his mind and won't let him into Hell... He doesn't just go *chomp* like, say, Cth*lh*...
So, yeah. I could TOTALLY see him hauling Certain People away in broad daylight because, "Dude, you're giving me a bad rep!"
I spent a lot of time wondering, some years ago, if I would ever become a black hat. Well, no... maybe a dark charcoal grey in some areas (including my actual literal hat), but claiming medical neutrality.... but I have learnt to admire people like Shiv who actually have less fucks to give about the rules than I do but still do the right thing because they're a decent human being under all that scarring. Or Cuoio. Boss White. Kraken. Or on this side of the tef, Ed Snowden...
I've actually gotten involved in improving Signal, the secure messaging app Snowden rec'ed... I haven't dove into the actual code yet but I'm contributing good bug reports... :)
But, yeah. S'far as I can tell, if there is a pointy-tailed bad dude, he actually gives a shit, unlike some of the anatomy-groping jackholes in the other Washington.

Considering that the source document pares down the whole list of "shalt" and "shalt not"s down to just two, and one of those is to love your neighbor as yourself, I often wonder about the level of self-hatred required of such people in order for them to retain their stated views while remaining true to their faith.

Many of my Goth friends got to be Goth because they started a little left of center and the "polite society" around them was intolerant of that, but the Goths weren't. I got to be Goth because said friends pulled me in as a kid before I could get all hurt and rejected. Generous and loving people, Goths. Cue pearl-clutching, an escape or two by those in need of a way out, and maybe a few long hard looks in the mirror for a couple people. It's not as if the sparrow-winged gangster girl hasn't seen this sort of scenario play out before...
*And again with Fledgling Grace: The Ethiopian red-bellied parrot mentioned in "The Wingdresser's Kitchen" has wing undersides showing peach. Maybe they're a they, but aren't out about it? I can't seem to get this particular prompt to gel.

...which is incidentally how I like to think my religious community would respond to zombies who arent trying to madly devour folks. Plus it is a far more sensible method than running aroind acreaming...

Date: 2020-02-05 04:12 am (UTC)And for any series you think it would fit: Atticus Finch at one point says that "a bible in the hands on one man can be more dangerous than a gun in the hands of another." (Might be misquoting slightly; I didn't look it up.) Church-folk can and will use their rules as rigid walls, no matter who it hurts. That particular sort will drive their children away if their pastor tells them to, and feel righteous about it as they do. They not only don't think for themselves, they consider it a virtue. Devils, on the other hand, are all about breaking the rules. So what of church-folk using rules to do harm, and devils breaking the rules to repair the damage?

Date: 2020-02-05 04:53 am (UTC)The New Testament as set on modern America with:
- the religious traditionalists as the Phirasees
- Mary Magdaline as a (former?) teen prostitute
- Jesus' mother as a Latina teen mother (maybe a Dreamer?)
- Jesus' social father as ethnically Middle Eastern and Muslim (and stepping up into marriage, as in the original story). I'd like that relationship to last.
- the Disciples being as varied to modern senses as they were in the source material (an ex-religious fundie, an ultra-liberal superactivist, Doves and Hawks,...)
- Jesus actually having the people skills to get those diverse groups to work together
- Jesus ect all being religious, but not being preachy
- miracles! Which are explained away as 'declared dead too soon,' 'everyone brought lunch,' 'drugs in the water supply'
- the preaching gets flagged as a cult... and they end up talking to ICE or the Feds... and they pick up at least one new recruit
- I also think it would be interesting if Jesus were younger than most of the disciples
- please can we have more gender/race/abledness/other diversity among the Disciples?

Date: 2020-02-05 06:29 am (UTC)actually, prompt idea: young frankenstein or polychrome heroics universe, the church is prevented from helping everyone by essentially bureaucracy, the "sinners" help those who have fallen through the cracks
how much history research are you willing to do? because I kind of want to see the t america version of the sisters of perpetual indulgence
