These are the content notes for "Because We Are All Unique."
"We are all different, which is great, because we are all unique. Without diversity, life would be very boring."

This is what happened in local-Vermont when Rutland tried to invite Syrian refugees.
By 2014, Syria had at least 6.5 million internally displaced refugees and over 3 million fleeing to other countries.
Most of Syria has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Some refugees want to settle in a place similar to their lost home, while others want something as different as possible. Rutledge is looking for that second group.
The government care team includes 13 people who speak Arabic to assist the refugees in settling into their new home:
5 translators for a year
5 social workers for a year
a Syrian doctor, a nurse and an Emotional First Aide
Case loads for social workers have been noted as 19 families (with a manageable case load of 14), 2-6 families (preservation) or 15-17 families (protective services), and 18.5 families (with a recommended case load of 12-14). Family Nurse Partnerships mark an average case load of 25. So the 5 social workers will each have about 20 people (roughly 5 families) out of the 100 refugees (average family size of 4, so about 25 families) in the Rutledge cohort.
French and English are used in educated Syrian circles, particularly in Aleppo and Damascus. Of the two, English is more popular.
Successful refugee integration requires knowing what works and what doesn't. Effective programs support refugees in gaining employment, education, housing, and social networking. Refugees often need special services for diet, health care, mental care, disabilities, and so on. Their religious needs may differ from the local pattern and must also be met. Those who do not speak English require translators until they become fluent. The more funding available, the better these programs tend to work. Also, it's better to keep refugees in groups large enough that they can support each other through the difficult process of resettlement. Read a handbook on resettlement. Refugees face many challenges to integration.
"Looking Backwards" is one of my all-time favorite political cartoons. It shows locals seeking to ban new immigrants, but behind them are the shadows of their immigrant ancestors.
Stipends for refugees need to cover expected household expenses until people can get jobs. T-America tends to divide these into a few main categories like food, clothes, and housing then a general fund. Donations from charitable groups or individuals also help.
This list of categories suggests percentage ranges of income for different categories:
Giving — 10%
Saving — 10%
Food — 10% to 15%
Utilities — 5% to 10%
Housing costs — 25%
Transportation — 10%
Health — 5% to 10%
Insurance — 10% to 25%
Recreation — 5% to 10%
Personal spending — 5% to 10%
Miscellaneous — 5% to 10%
This is an average household budget (across all sizes and locations) from 2017:
Food: $7,729. They break this down into Food at home ($4,363) and Food away from home ($3,365).
Alcoholic beverages: $558
Housing: $19,884
Apparel and services: $1,833
Transportation: $9,576 (of which gasoline and fuel accounts for $1,968)
Healthcare: $4,928
Entertainment: $3,203
Personal care products and services: $762
Reading: $110
Education: $1,491
Tobacco products and smoking supplies: $332
Miscellaneous: $1,010
Cash contributions: $1,873
Personal insurance and pensions: $6,771
If you were to add up all the spending, the total expenditure is $60,060.
Each refugee will get to choose one Vermont-themed garment.
There are always some high-demand job sectors where the need for goods and services exceeds the available supply of applicants for those positions. T-America addresses this issue by providing free job training for them to people in certain support categories such as the unemployed, internally displaced citizens fleeing disasters, and foreign refugees settling in America.
Trauma can create challenges in language acquisition and other learning processes. Matching language of retrieval with language of recording can assist people in working through trauma in therapy. Conversely, using a second or later language to discuss fraught topics can make them less stressful. So while trauma can complicate learning a new language, bilingual people have tools to regulate their emotions, and learning a new language can help people set aside traumatic memories.
Malta is exceptional in protecting intersex and other QUILTBAG rights.
Art supplies includes sketchbooks, sketch kits, and cheap colored pencils. Art therapy and nature therapy both help with trauma recovery.

Traumatic stress can manifest in different ways. Prolonged Duress Stress Disorder is similar to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, but involves a long span of torment instead of a single brief incident. In this case, it's too early to tell which of the refugees will suffer from traumatic stress, but after escaping a war zone, it is likely that many of them will have problems. Understand how to cope with traumatic stress or help a friend with it.
(These are awful.)
Torture produces terrible long-term effects. Torture survivors often have difficulty recovering, even with help. There are ways to recover from torture and help trauma survivors.
Shared pain can forge tight connections between people, as in refugees. Trauma bonding can be positive or negative. There are many aspects of bonding associated with traumatic experiences, and it helps to support healthy connections among survivors or between survivors and caregivers.
(These links are touchy.)
The core of trauma-informed care is asking "What happened to you?" instead of "What is wrong with you?" This forms the basis of the principles and practices. There are instructions for supporting trauma survivors and working through your own trauma. First responders typically have workplace procedures to minimize the risk of developing PTSD.
Effective meetings must be concise and on time.
