"Way Down Deep"

[Monday, October 6, 2014]

Mrrhow the Mercurial realized
that she and her littermates
were drifting apart.

It wasn't that they didn't
like each other anymore.

They just wanted different things.

Way down deep, we’re all
motivated by the same urges,

Cayenne said as she shredded
one end of the couch. I just have
the courage to live by them
.

Napoleon stalked toward
Riposte and then pounced,
yowling to demand dinner.

I go on the principle that it
never does any harm to ask for
what you want,
Napoleon said.

Except that it did, because
Riposte blotted the blood off
his ankle and shut Napoleon
in the laundry room instead of
bringing out the cat food.

Mrrhow was beginning
to understand that what she
wanted was food without labor,
shelter without confinement,
and love without penalties.

Her ears radared sideways.
She just didn't know how
to go about getting them.

Way down deep, her family
was really dysfunctional, and she
didn't know what to do about it.

"Hey there," Riposte said.
"Do you want some company?"

Mrrhow butted her head against
his uninjured leg to mark him.

Riposte reached down to rub
her ears. "Come on, let's sit on
the couch and turn on the birdfeeder."

Mrrhow bounded onto the couch
and curled into a donut shape.

Riposte turned on the television,
and the screen filled with
finches and grosbeaks.

Mrrhow had to admit that,
even if humans were annoying,
they made the most marvelous toys.
