This poem came out of the October 1, 2019 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by prompts from [personal profile] janetmiles and [personal profile] alexseanchai. It also fills the "Frighten" square in my 10-1-19 card for the Fall Festival Bingo. This poem has been sponsored by [personal profile] janetmiles.

"Rooster Little Saves the Sky"

They had built too many
castles in the air.

That was a fact.

Now the sky was falling
because of that. It slumped
at sunrise and sunset, and
sometimes the clouds
ran down the edge.

When rocks began
falling off the castles
and shaking the acorns
from the trees in summer
before they turned ripe,
Chicken Little determined
to do something about it.

"The sky is falling!
The sky is falling!"
she shouted as she
ran through the town.

"Silly hen," said Big Pig.
"The sky is not falling.
Those are just acorns.
Stop trying to frighten us."

"They are green acorns
in the middle of summer,
knocked off by rocks falling
from the cloud castles,"
Chicken Little insisted.

But nobody believed her.

So that night when
Chaunticleer the Rooster
was fast asleep on his perch,
she cut off his fancy tailfeathers
and fashioned them into a wig.

The next morning, she put
the wig on her butt so that
she looked just like a rooster.

Then she went into town.

"Who might you be?"
said the Raven at the gate.

"Why, I'm Rooster Little,"
she said, waving her butt.
The sickles danced in the air.

"Go ahead," said the Raven,
opening the wooden gate.

Already the town was
busy as the merchants
set up their booths.

"The sky is falling!"
said Rooster Little.

People believed him.

Notes:

Chicken Little is a fairytale character famous for the line "The sky is falling!"

Climate change is real and dangerous. Despite the evidence, some people refuse to believe it or do anything about it. This pattern tends to appear whenever solving a problem would require major effort.

As a general rule, men don't believe women. Part of this comes from the fact that men and women often care about very different things, which means they may not grasp why the other side's complaints are such a big deal. But even on important matters, men downplay women's input. Men just don't seem to consider women intelligent, capable, or honest about anything and thus routinely dismiss their concerns. This is a serious problem in environmental activism, and in health care it routinely kills women.

I'm amused, especially since a "castle in the sky" is also vernacular for an unachievable dream. Of course the sky is distorted and rocks are falling, blue sky speculation isn't supposed to hold up an impossible (at least not forever), it's supposed to offer hypotheses and support good decision making!

Honestly, I wish more of these kinds of stories were around when my boys were small.
