Tuesday Yardening

Today is cloudy, mild, and calm.

Round One -- We shoveled ash out of the firepit and dumped it in the prairie garden.  Then we picked up sticks from the grass wall in the south lot toward the house.

Round Two -- I dumped out three bags of topsoil in the hollow beyond the patio. It's not really topsoil though, it's full of wood chips in muck.  >_<  Oh well.  I threw down some grass and clover seed; hopefully it will sprout in that mess.  At least the hollow is less deep now. 

The cherry trees are blooming in the orchard.

Some bagged materials really aren't what the label says. I wouldn't expect quite so many large rocks in potting soil as I've gotten.

I may just about have gotten all the 'good' potting soil into pots. I'm 'cooking' some potting soil I got with planters to be cautious.

Last year's "potting soil" was nearly pure clay. I was looking for something heavy, but I was not looking to make bricks! >_< Reason being, year before that was so light that the pots fell over every time the wind blew. So for the second year in a row, I'm having to buy all new potting soil to fill a bunch of containers. Argh.

While some of my potting soil has been wacky over the years, I try to ameliorate that by storage practices over the winter. I do have one planter that got the boggy tail of a storage bag with some maple leaves layered in the middle.

I use sycamore leaves in the bottom of pots to keep the dirt from leaking out! :D Or half-rotted leaves in the bottom half or so of larger containers, to save on the more expensive potting soil.

When I get a decent batch, it's usually good for several years before it conks out and I have to replace it.
