I recall the Shakers havinh adult-sized rocking beds for use in their infirmaries; anyone interested in carpentry (or Shaker furniture) could also look into those.
I actually ended up sleeping in a hammock once... during an earthquake! Surprisingly it wasn't that bad/different from being inside or in a regular bed. (Though, this was only a minor one)
Literally are shaped like the child's cradle, with a flat bottom, angled long sides, and wide, shallow rockers for stability. They're MUCH narrower than a twin bed- I'd call it 24" from shoulder to shoulder, and actually consider that a plus if I'm lying in one on a blanket (to wrap in, of course).
They have a slightly higher headboard than footboard, but no hood design, and the flat sheets would be easy to tuck around the mattress to re-make the bed as needed.
I love the Shaker tables, and a few other elements. Their efficient, functional furniture helped create the Arts and Crafts style (What we call Mission style now).
But, they are HARD to find even museum images of, since the sickbeds were seldom in "public" areas.
Yeah, it's related to Quaker and Amish styles too, although Amish is evolving toward more ornamentation since it's a luxury item around here -- at least what they sell to the public is.
