Poem: "The House Behind the Gate"

This poem came out of the September 2018 crowdfunding Creative Jam. It was inspired by an image prompt from mdlbear. It has been sponsored by zianuray. This poem belongs to the Monster House series.


"The House Behind the Gate"


The sky is clear and blue,
dotted with fluffy white clouds.

Below, the street is darker,
and shadows cling like cobwebs
to the leaves of the trees.

A single streetlamp
lifts the darkness a little,
and the windows of the houses
gleam with golden light.

Toward the middle of the block,
though, there stands a tall stone gate,
guarding the low wall that divides
the sidewalk from the yards.

In the house behind the gate,
there is no light at all.

There's a house on the hill, I can see through the trees.

It's large and imposing, with turrets and balconies.

Its windows look lonely, though, silent and still.

No one is ever seen in the house or on the hill.

(From a warm-up exercise I did in high school. It's not quite the same tone as this piece, but it feels similar somehow.)
