This poem is spillover from the September 4, 2018 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by a prompt from
curiosity. It also fills the "thyme" square in my 9-5-18 Spices card for the 1000 Words or Less Bingo Fest. This poem has been sponsored by
zianuray. It belongs to the Shiv thread of the Polychrome Heroics series. It follows "Creating a Community Around Food."
"His Kitchen Garden"
-- a triolet
For Shiv, his kitchen garden is a drawer.
He's running low on sage. He's out of thyme.
To make the soup he wants, he needs some more.
For Shiv, his kitchen garden is a drawer.
It's filled with herbs and dirt his hands explore.
He picks and cooks, when not engaged in crime.
For Shiv, his kitchen garden is a drawer.
He's running low on sage. He's out of thyme.

Notes:
Read about the triolet form.
Shiv's herb box contains (from left to right, top to bottom) rosemary, chervil, thyme, oregano, sage, and mint. It is upcycled from an old wooden drawer.

Date: 2018-10-16 04:42 am (UTC)This started back in prison when Dr. Bloch came up with the Get Your Sh!t Together Diet. That's where Shiv learned things like cutting up fruit for a salad, putting toppers on oatmeal, or sticking raw veggies into a cup with dip in the bottom.
When Cook realized that Shiv had next to no kitchen safety skills, he started teaching those lessons. That's where Shiv learned how to break eggs and several ways to cook them. He actually makes great omelettes.
The Finns feed everyone they like. They teach like most people breathe. So just hanging around them, Shiv is learning the family recipes the same way the other kids do. Most of that is fairly practical stuff, like Graham sending him home with a sourdough starter that can be used for anything from bread to pancakes.
Then Gray showed up with his chef-level sweets. Gray not being an idiot, he taught Shiv some basic techniques and recipes instead of the really intricate stuff. But Shiv is quite smart with his hands; he can remember a process without even trying. So he picked some some fairly complex ideas like mise en place just by osmosis. That's also where Shiv got introduced to a lot of fancier ingredients.
Feel free to prompt for more of this if you wish, because it's an ongoing process.

Re: Yes ...
Date: 2018-10-16 06:01 am (UTC)The November fishbowl theme is "family of choice" which fits perfectly. One idea I have is Shiv visiting Tolli and Simon, and making omelettes. Another is Mrs. Dr. Finn being upset from a bad call, and Shiv just wanders into the kitchen and starts baking cookies.

Aww! I quite agree.

I squish you too. :D
