These are the location notes for "Catch a Rising Tide."


Red Island in the Republic of the Maldives belongs to the former pirate Redbeard, who came through Sea Shepherd and Kraken. He has two wives, the Ginger Twins, Pepper and Poppy, whose superpower is Twin Link. They have six children. Redbeard founded Red Island as a refuge for redheads, who often suffer discrimination elsewhere. He sponsors the adoption of redheaded children, who may have a harder time finding families otherwise. He practices eugenics to increase the number of redheads, from singles mixers to fertility services. He is lobbying to have redheads recognized as crayon soups, a point supported by the higher incidence of superpowers (notably Second Sight, Fire Powers, Eidetic Memory, and the Bardic Gift) among redheads.

The genetics of red hair include several variations of the MC1R gene, along with implications of some other genes, and in addition to hair color it also correlates with pale skin and freckles. Siblings in the same family with RR, Rr, and rr genes can wind up looking quite different. In Terramagne, MC1R provides excellent support for superpowers; while the status of redheads as crayon soups is under debate, the gene defintely works and plays well with others in the cluster of "latent" genes. Redheads often suffer from discrimination, sometimes called gingerism. Among the more prevalent areas are Britannia and France. As a counterpoint, ginger pride celebrates redheaded people and culture. The ginger pride flag has stripes from red to yellow.

There is a total capacity of 434 people in the villas. Many of the villas have couples, some trios or parents and a child. The larger homes tend to be closer to capacity. Actual occupancy is around 400.

The O'Malley General Clinic and Fertility Centre and the Adult Learning Centre are two halves of a live-work building. Each one has a block of apartments above it, and each block holds 34 units, for a total of 68 units. Most are studio or studio plus units, with a maximum capacity of 2 people. There are also three 1-bedroom units, with a maximum capacity of 2 adults and 1 child. That's a total capacity of 139 people, although actual occupation is around 100 because this is where most of the singles live, leaving the villas for couples.

That makes the total capacity for the island 573. So far, it's a little over 500. However, some residents prefer houseboats, and that's not a static number because houseboats can move. That's probably at least another hundred people, though.


The arrival jetty provides a place for boats to dock. It leads to the reception pavilion.

Beside the original Little Explorers Kids' Club is now a small school. The first floor has two general classrooms, a small work room, a library, an art classroom, a music classroom, a quiet room, and a garden deck with play space. There are 126 seats on the first floor. The second floor holds the aministration area with a head teacher's office, school office, lounge with couches, hall for dining / indoor play / performance, emotional first aid room, medical room, changing rooms, and a small breakout room.

The teen lounge in the Little Explorers Kids' Club has couches, tables, and several arcade games. The porch outside the teen lounge has table games such as ping-pong and foosball. The children's part of the club has a kitchen and dining room, a living room with a viewscreen and beanbags, and a porch with seating and large games. The outdoor play area beside the club has a pool, lounge chairs, and a playground that includes a pirate ship. The yard beside the club also includes a fenced tot lot with sand and playground equipment for small children.

The Beach Club for adults is near the Little Explorers Kids' Club and looks similar. This indoor-outdoor lounge has a table and benches. The exercise room offers a variety of equipment. The game room has card tables, video games, tables for chess or checkers, a pool table, and more. The orange lounge has seating along with wall niches full of interesting things. The yoga room has floor mats and slings hanging overhead.

Beautiful paths of white sand connect the facilities of Red Island. There are few real roads on the island, so they don't need many vehicles.

The Diving and Water Sports Centre teaches all kinds of water skills and hobbies. In addition to recreation, it organizes professional fishing on Red Island. The water around the island offers many different fish to catch. Seafood is a main part of the diet here as in the rest of the Maldives. Parasails are popular here.

Beach hammocks for redheads often include shade awnings.

Red Island provides several restaurants because not all the villas have a full kitchen. Firedoor Signature Fine Dining has a large patio for outdoor eating. The interior includes a pool. There are overwater dining rooms for private parties.

Breeze Poolside Dining and Bar overlooks a large swimming pool. One side of the pool has round couches. The long edge of the pool has planters with palm trees. Underwater lounge chairs in the pool encourage guests to relax. Breeze also offers beach dining, which is popular throughout the Maldives. Inside the restaurant has various tables and chairs.

The Edge All Day Dining has a dock with tables and chairs. A long view of the interior shows various seating areas and the fountain.

The spa is a T-shaped builing on its own wooden walkway over the water. This aids relaxation for residents with traumatic backgrounds. The exercise room includes weights, stationary bicycles, treadmills, yoga balls, and more. A counseling room is available for clients in need of mental care. The healthy touch rooms have tables for bodywork. So do the overwater massage rooms, with glass floors. Overwater showers also provide ocean views. Hydrotherapy rooms have a large tub for soaking.

The boutique sells clothes, jewelry, housewares, and other items.

The Assembly Point is in the open garage area under the Town Hall.

The Town Hall is closer to the main part of the island than the clinic is. Most of the building is propped up on stilts, which helps reduce the risk of flooding in inhabited areas. The garage section holds police, fire, and other municipal vehicles. The actual Assembly Point is at the inward corner of the garage facing the beach, which allows people to gather in the open or under the covered plaza. The front steps point toward the beach, and this building is closer to the rest of the island than the clinic is. The garage floor plan shows where the municipal vehicles go. There are only a few real roads on the island. The first floor plan shows the areas devoted to Revenue Generating, Fire Department, Police Department, Council Chambers, Mechanical Room, First Aid, Municipal Offices, and Office of Emergency Management. Each one extends into the portion of the second floor directly above it.

The O'Malley General Clinic and Fertility Centre provides health care primarily for residents of Red Island, but accepts outside clients too. This is is the first fertility clinic in the Maldives -- previously, people had to go to India or elsewhere for advanced treatment, although some services are available in other Maldivian facilities. While the clinic will help partners of any hair color make a baby together, it only accepts general donations from redheads. It also welcomes donations from soups, so long as they have either the MC1R or a crayon red. So if someone needs donor gametes, most of those will be ordinary (rr) and a few will come from crayon soups who may or may not have the MC1R gene.

The clinic is closer to the ocean than the Town Hall is, between the Town Hall and the Adult Learning Centre. Above them is living space. The lounge room is a break area for employees. The reception area has an outside door and faces the beach. The lavender office section includes a front office for doctors, a middle officer for secretaries, a private dottie, and a back office for the administrator. The pharmacy stocks a wide range of supplies, and also dispenses free birth control in several forms to those so inclined. The main hallway connects a storage room, several public dotties, and the gray conference room. The large brown room is the recovery room. The yellow room is a preparation room for staff. The small green and brown rooms are exam and treatment rooms for fertility issues. The laundry room and clean room are on the middle left, then more waiting space with dotties. The blue and brown rooms are exam and treatment rooms for ordinary medical issues. The elevator goes up to the living level. Another storage room is on the middle right. The large room on the middle left is an operating room complete with a robotic rig for telemedicine. The two small rooms beside it are for minor procedures and lab work. The main lab is near the upper left. The red rooms are the emergency department. The top row has three more labs, an emergency exit with a teleport pad, and more elevators. Genetic counseling is available for clients in need.

The Adult Learning Centre is just to the right of the O'Malley General Clinic and Fertility Centre, closest to the ocean. It offers 10 seminar rooms, 2 classrooms that can be joined or divided, a copier room, a library in L3-304, a quiet room to the right of the library, four offices, a reception area, a lounge, six exam rooms for taking tests, a computer lab, and two work stations.

The original 1-bedroom duplexes along the beach were torn down and replaced with 4-bedroom beach villas to accommodate larger families. See the first floor plan and second floor plan. The maximum capacity is 12 people, and there are 9 of them, for a total of 108. The left wing and the right wing each have a bedroom with two queen-size beds, a large viewscreen, an office area with desk and bookcases, a closet and glamour bath. The left wing has a small private pool, while the right wing shares the larger pool with the center. See the bedroom and bathroom with sink and toilet. The main floor of the center has a front living room with large viewscreen, a dining room with an expandable table that sits 8-12 people, a full kitchen, a smaller family room, a laundry room, a walk-through closet, a bedroom with tiny ensuite bathroom, a 3/4 bathroom with a shower, toilet, and sink, and a gaming area under the stairs. Upstairs, the master bedroom has a king-size bed, sitting area with large viewscreen, an office area with desk and bookcases, closet, and glamor bath. Outside there is a deck.

The Lagoon Pool Water Villa has an exterior deck, bedroom, and bathroom.

The Grand Residence can hold a maximum of 7 people: two adults and an infant in the master bedroom, plus four people in two pairs of bunk beds in the second bedroom. See the aerial view and row view. The front deck offers outdoor living space. The living room has couches and tables. A kitchenette provides some space to cook. The master bedroom has a water window. The bathroom includes sinks, shower, and bathtub. The twin bedroom has its own bathroom. This is the laundry room. A ladder leads to the upstairs office, where some people put a guest bed.



A gizmologist on Red Island makes BakeLights from hemp fiber, phosphorus, and other ingredients. A BakeLight resembles a bar of soap. It absorbs sunlight during the day, and at night it produces up to 12 hours of fairly bright light. These are widely used for lighting around Red Island.

Beach pavilions are scattered around the island.

Wildlife includes geckos, herons, dolphins, and tropical fish.
