Why Harlan Ellison Mattered

Everyone who's ever met Harlan has a story about him.  Here are two great ones. 

He's a Trickster.  They're always a pain in the ass; it's their job.  But they can save your bacon when nothing else can.  I wouldn't have edited Harlan's work for all the water on Europa, but I wouldn't have missed meeting or reading him for the world.

I once heard him on a TV show back when I was much younger. Even then, I wish I could have met him; he seemed to be one of thos snarky people, that even back then I liked, that would have been fun to hang around with.

...

Even now, I wish I would have known more than the compilation books he wrote-but I could never sit anyone down long enough to tell me more about him/what he wrote. My brother, who was the fan, was in college...and I was just out of high school, so it just...never worked. ... and I was not nearly the salvy tech researcher I am today, so. :(
