Poem: "Gryphons and Their Pearls"

"Gryphons and Their Pearls"
The gryphons nest on cliffs
that rise high above the beach.
Even the dragon shrimp
cannot catch them there,
soaring on warm thermals
to watch the rolling surf.
The gryphons gather pearls
the size of eggs, cast off
by giant oysters.
They cannot lay eggs
of their own -- their young
are born live and fuzzy --
but the instinct is still there.
The gryphlets lounge on a bed
richer than any king's, and bat
the milky balls over the edge.
Far below, disgruntled unicorn hunters,
unable to find their rare elusive prey,
wait to see if the burnished globes
will roll far enough away
for them to steal.

Notes:
Gryphons have been depicted in many ways, often as the guardians of treasure.

Thank you!
