Poem: "In the Workshop of Misfit Toys"

This is the freebie for the March 2018
crowdfunding Creative Jam. It was inspired by a prompt from
scrubjayspeaks. It also fills the "stuffed animal" square in my 2-28-18 card for the Slice-of-Life Bingo fest. This poem follows "A Letter to King Moonracer."
"In the Workshop of Misfit Toys"
King Moonracer was a practical liege.
He knew that everyone needed
something to do, so that they
would not feel useless, and
there were many things to do.
In the workshop of misfit toys,
the teams of stuffed animals went
back and forth like elves in the night,
quietly and invisibly fixing things for
children with sensory overload.
They repaired blinking lights
and buzzing air conditioners.
They replaced hard mattresses
with soft ones, and laundry soap
with stuff that wouldn't itch.
While Santa's elves made
toys for idle amusement,
King Moonracer's misfits
made tools for survival.
They knew what it was like
to be looked down upon for
being a little bit different.

Notes:
King Moonracer is a character in "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer."
Sensory Processing Disorder has a wide range of symptoms. One way to address this is with a sensory diet. Because triggers can lead to miserable consequences, it's also important to reduce sensory overload.
