The day after Thanksgiving is Buy Nothing Day. Protest against rampant consumerism by boycotting money for the day. Some people like to host a giveaway.
For me, Buy Nothing Day is more accurately called Ain't Got No Money Day, but yeah, I like Buy Nothing Day too. Friggin Black Friday and Cyber Monday were creations of the greedy capitalist bastards, anyone who falls for that kind of thing is a dingus.
I won't be buying anything that isn't needful. Groceries, fuel, that sort of thing. If I succumb to the lure of retail, it will be at my local yarn shop. Of course, one could also argue that that is needful; pretty yarn feeds the soul. ;)
Well, except for eggs and more hot chocolate. We had everything else. (We even have marshmallows and chocolate and Graham crackers for s'mores if we want. But we had only two eggs left after making butterscotch pie.)
I took a walk instead. And I had thought about going to one of the malls, but... (1) People. I don't like the neighborhoods, the mall is going to be too much. (2) I realized what day it is, and I don't want to go out in that. I have heard the stories.
So my not participating is accidental, but I'm a visitor to this culture and that part of sight-seeing doesn't appeal to me anyway. Only makes me appreciate small villages more.

The humans kind of go rabid for a few days, and are best avoided.

Hah. I got the impression of herd animals being rounded and stressed into a run so the stragglers can be picked off. The people running this society seem largely predatory.
... Including in taking away the option to live outside of society. Back home I can travel for months without *needing* to go back to civilization. Here there doesn't seem to be a place left where the water's safe to drink without being filtered and pounded with chemicals.

Yeah, it makes me miss small villages too.
