By contrast, I remember the first time I heard a screech owl, when I was Very Small (maybe 3-4)... scared the you-know-what out of me, sounded like some kinda UFO... which it was, until Mother id'ed it... ;)
I've met Athena's owl more than once, as well as flesh-and-blood owls that would occasionally come by the woods around where I used to live. But supposedly some Native American tribes thought it was an omen of death(*). I think it's wonderful that the world has such creatures as owls!
(*)A long time ago, Michael Martin Murphey had a hit song called "Wildfire", about a man in love with the ghost of a young woman who died in a blizzard while searching for her lost pony named Wildfire. At the end of the song, he sings, "There's been a hoot owl howlin' by my window for six nights in a row - she's comin' for me, I know, and on Wildfire we're both gonna go..."
