Hmm... well that could just be the work of a rare artistic genius.. or it could be that what we think of the past's art is the result of judging it's level of attainment by what survives through to today..aka the most common and widely distributed pieces.

Which would be a bit like judging today's art by the average DeviantArt account.

... I wonder what they were using for magnification at the time? Or did this particular stonecarver just have exquisitely good detail vision? Huh.

IIRC they may have had glass lenses of reasonable quality, for definite they had ground quartz.
