Fledglings!

I went out to take pictures today, and when I approached the porch, all three  mourning doves exploded from the nest!  \o/ Mama dove has successfully fledged two squabs this season.  I don't know if they'll come back or not, sometimes they do for a few days.  It will be interesting to see if she starts another nest.  Often they go through several a summer.

Mama dove was extremely lucky. We have way too many squirrels and crows steadily patrolling for baby birds around here.

It's not rare for a nest to fail here, but it's usually at the egg stage. That happened twice this spring; this is the third nest I've tracked. But once the eggs hatch, the nestlings usually fledge.
