"Circles of Sound"

Crickets live inside
circles of sound,

their song reaching out
into the soft summer night

and the sound of predators
approaching to silence them,

their steady chirps counting out
the rise and fall of the temperature,

which is all to the well and good
until one gets into the house.

Notes:

Crickets are extremely sensitive to sound and other vibrations, which is why they stop chirping if you try to track them down.  However, this makes them great practice for would-be hunters; if you can sneak up on a cricket, you can sneak up on darn near anything.

Due to a confluence of physics and biology, warmer weather makes crickets chirp faster.  You can therefore estimate the temperature by counting their chirps.
