It is the nature of power that is not given by those who have it, but taken by those who did not.

That makes a lot more sense when you realize that assholes like that have very little chance of attracting a free women, and are more likely to get laid if they can buy or steal one.

However, people can be given -- by themselves. They can choose to belong to each other.

Well, the system is designed that way. It needs poor people to terrorize middle-class people into being obedient. Do as we say or we'll kick you into the street and torture you forever. It works, until the gap gets too wide and the bottom too miserable. Then either society collapses from within, gets invaded from without, or tears itself apart. Very rarely does it manage effective repairs.

Though it does remind me of the observation that homophobia is the fear that gay men will treat straight men the way straight men treat women.
