Today's Trip

We went to see "The Jungle Book" today.  It was awesome.  This is easily my favorite live-action take on the story, the best balanced between humorous and serious elements, and of course, Scarlet is the best Kaa ever.  If you have not yet seen it, I rate this movie most highly recommended.

For supper we went to Brixx.  This is one I had looked up in advance, and I had two reactions to the menu:
1) Aaaaand now I'm hungry.
2) I am going to starve to death between two bales of hay.

We did eventually decide what to order, though.  The garlic sticks are excellent, the meatball appetizer quite good.  The draft root beer is made with real vanilla and sassafras,  which is almost impossible to find anymore; I have had root beer as good, but none better.  The rosemary chicken with wild mushrooms pizza is mouthwatering.  I had to take off half a point because the rosemary, being whole instead of chopped, was sharp enough to stab.  (There's a reason why it's always supposed to be chopped, and that is it.)  But it had the best, strongest, most umami shitake mushrooms I have encountered.  For dessert we got the s'mores pizza, also delicious and it comes in six slices just like the rest of them.  While this is not cheap pizza, neither is it as exorbitant as gourmet pizza often is; it's a good price for its class, and you absolutely get what you pay for.  We definitely plan to go back and try more things.

And I'm still stuffed.

None in Texas, alas. The nearest one to me appears to be in Birmingham. OTOH, there's at least one in Atlanta, so maybe we'll be able to check it out next year at GAFilk.

It's a terrific restaurant for going with friends. All their pizzas are 10" cut in 6 slices. So if you have several people, get multiple pizzas and then folks can try different flavors. The s'mores dessert pizza will easily feed 2-6 people depending how many slices you want; most people wouldn't be able to finish it alone, especially after a bunch of other pizza.

If you have a simple-food person in your party, the garlic sticks are relatively subtle and tasty; a couple of the pizzas are fairly basic too. For folks who like to try new things, there's the rest of the menu, some of which is stuff not easy to find. Brixx is a good restaurant to take fannish friends to.

You can always watch for them if you travel, or maybe they'll add a new location closer to you. Ours is relatively new.

The s'mores pizza could easily be made at home with a pizza crust or pita or tortilla base, then dark chocolate, then graham crackers and mini marshmallows.

I've long had a mixed impression of The Jungle Book, and this coloured my appreciation of the latest movie. I don't know when I first saw the animated Disney movie, but I've had the unabridged (and annotated) reprint of Rudyard Kipling's stories since I was nine. In Kipling's original, I did not like that Mowgli treated his wolf brothers like servants. In this latest Disney version the gigantic size of all the animals was distracting, the fact that Mowgli got scolded for making a tool, all the while wearing a perfectly knotted loincloth was dissonant, and I lamented the absence of the "we are of one blood, ye and I" polite statement of kinship. Kaa was not a foe in the books.

I liked Babe more.
