Today's project was creating an enclosure behind the log garden. I dragged some more logs back there so I can dump dead leaves inside. That way, they'll stay put, create habitat, hold moisture, and remain available in case I want some leaf litter during the warm season. This is a good use for old logs if you have any lying around.

Looking east over the house yard, you can see the barrel garden and the notch leading to the fields beyond.

The barrel garden doesn't look like much yet, but around the base many more tulips are sprouting. This picture is before I raked off the leaves later in the day.

A wide view of the log garden shows mostly the front and a little of the new addition in back.

In front of the log garden, at the base of the logs, many sprouts are coming up. These are mostly grape hyacinths and some crocuses. They're easier to see since I recently raked the leaves away from them.

Looking at it from the narrow end gives a better impression of how much space is inside the ring of logs. It will probably hold 1-2 cubic yards of leaves. Overtime they'll flatten and break down so I can add more. You can also see how many of the logs are hollow. I've been putting potting soil into some of them to grow plants in summer. I suspect that filling the middle area with leaves will help the plants grow better because the area will stay wetter and the potting soil will be less prone to leak out.

Lovely cool and wintry walk, thanks for posting.

I neglected to mention the hint about planting moonflower seeds, which is: 1. with nail clippers, snip a tiny bit away of the seed casing on the outside curve of the kidney-shaped seed so you just glimpse the white; 2. soak in water 24 hours, and 3. plant. I hope this helps.
