This poem came out of the July 7, 2015 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by a prompt from [personal profile] zeeth_kyrah. It also fills the "India" square in my 6-10-15 card for the [community profile] genprompt_bingo fest. This poem has been sponsored by [personal profile] mama_kestrel.

"Spider Granddaughter"

I left Turtle Island
to visit my relatives
in Āryāvarta.

Nobody had time for me
over there, either.

I set a fire with Kali's torch,
and nobody burned.

I opened the Arctic
with Ganesha's key,
and nobody froze.

I put on Shiva's music,
and nobody danced.

So I took my time
taking the world apart.

The two-legs were so
annoying anyway --
they fouled the water and
cut down the standing people
and killed the four-legs.

I let them see the consequences
of their actions, dried up the lakes
and set the Arctic on fire.

Oh, everyone noticed
when they saw all that smoke!

My relatives sent home early and
Spider Grandmother scolded me
and made me help her with
cleaning the World Wide Web.

But at least they weren't
ignoring me anymore.

Notes:

Turtle Island is an indigenous name for North America, and Spider Grandmother is an important mythic figure here.

Read about India and Āryāvarta. Kali, Ganesha, and Shiva all come from there.

that certain nonhuman forces have as much trouble dealing with THEIR kids at certain ages (and levels of boredom) that the Finns do, for example?

Snicker.

Snicker.

Then again, the attitude is entirely familiar in my kids, too.

I have a special relationship with spiders.... Here's a video of me* reading a piece I wrote back in 1990 (recorded in 2012), about one particularly ...intimate... encounter I had with an eensy-weensy spider (You can also hear my "CP accent" kick in, when I try-- and fail-- not to laugh at something I'd not read in 22 years [that's my defense, and I'm sticking with it!]):

That is a lovely video.

The image of the industrious little weaver making a joke is just fantastic. <3

Thanks. ... Especially since she (probably a she) had no idea...

And, since That Season is upon us, this seems like a good time and place for linking to the folk motif of Christmas Spiders:
