I love it 'cause it's your classic coyote tale -- only we're the ones in the trickster role (aren't we always?) -- getting too clever for our britches, and end up causing more trouble for ourselves, and deciding to eliminate a predator because predator = badness, only to have an even Stronger predator take its place, and merging with our "cuddly best friends" in the process.
That's doable. We have a red fox mentioned already. Or consider that a superpower is anything advantageous that is NOT standard for that species. In this case, "no fear of humans" is standard for dogs, but a superpower for wolves or coyotes. Hell, almost all we have left are the ones with Average (0) No Fear of Humans allowing them to skirt the edges. Add dog's Master (+6) Man's Best Friend to the mix, suddenly the coywolves are sporting Good and Expert levels of No Fear. 0_o
Which means that in Terramagne someone probably looked at folks killing off the wolves, coyotes, and foxes ... and decided to help them fight back a little by crossing up the genes. That's great, until they start eating hikers.
*chuckle* A while back, someone embedded a live coyote in the grille of their vehicle and didn't notice for several hundred miles. I wrote that up as a little Coyote story.
Leonard was able to talk to the humans because Cypher had a linguistic superpower..sort of a limited focus telepathy that allows him to understand any language after listening to someone speak it for a short while. Leonard was sufficiently developed mentally to actually have a language complex enough to be understandable by Cypher.
Which was just as well, because he'd just been hit by a truck and was able to ask directly for help, rather be left to animal control who'd probably have him put down.

That makes sense.

Yeah, SPOON has a variety of accounts dedicated to helping soups with assorted challenges.
That actually is a factor behind some types of super-strength, and can be identified as a precursor even without the protective field that distinguishes it as a superpower.
