The traditional Jewish blessing on seeing a rainbow refers to the end of Noah's flood, and the rainbow as God's sign of God's promise never again to bring a deluge to destroy humanity (Genesis 9:8-17): Barukh atah Adonai Eloheinu melekh zokher hab’rit v’ne’eman bivrito v’kayam b’ma’amaro. Blessed are You, Lord our God, Ruler of the Universe, who remembers the covenant, and is faithful to God’s covenant, and keeps God’s promise.
But I prefer to use a non-traditional blessing, with the formulaic part as used by my Reconstructionist congregation: Holy One of blessing, Your presence fills Creation. You are the creator of wonders.
(bows) Thank you! I made that one myself. The inspiration was a conversation with a suitemate of my daughter's when she was in college back in the early 1990s. I was helping her move between terms or something like that, and while she was out of the room this young guy said, obviously with great anxiety and hesitancy, "I.... I'm gay." I replied "Okay. I'm not", and kept on doing whatever I was doing. ***HUGE BURDEN LIFTED***, glowing, he exclaimed "You're gay-friendly!" And I have proudly worn that label ever since.
