Moment of Silence: "Michael Bond"
Jun. 29th, 2017 01:56 pmMichael Bond has passed away. He created the famous Paddington Bear. :( While it wasn't my favorite childhood series, I did read some Paddington and I'm familiar with the character.
Thursday Yardening
Jun. 29th, 2017 04:00 pmToday is mostly sunny, warm, and breezy.
I watered plants and then rearranged some of them. I moved two of the long planters from the porch to the picnic table. They will get more sun on the picnic table, and hopefully the long shape of the pots will make them less prone to tipping over in the wind, a serious problem I've had this year. The first pepper is pretty much ripe now. If I grow peppers again next year, I am going to look for more long planters or wide shallow ones for better stability. It's not like peppers have deep roots anyhow.
EDIT 6-29-17: I cut some brush.
EDIT 6-29-17: More brush cutting.
EDIT 6-29-17: Even more brush cutting!
As it is getting dark, I am now done for the night.

Shiv relished his newfound freedom,
but he tried to resist the temptation
to go out and make trouble from scratch.
Boss White frowned on that kind of thing,
and besides, just because Shiv had
made it six months didn't mean that
he wanted to get arrested again.

Turq was out collecting
some broken glass bottles --
you couldn't get a deposit back
from them, but you could take them
to the recycling center and get a dollar
for a five-gallon bucket of glass bits.

"You want me to do what?!"
I exclaim, staring at Savoir Faire.
"And why do you want Farce?"
"We're assembling a special team,"
says Savoir Faire. "We need people
who can handle a high level of pain.
Medical and combat skills will also
be helpful. You've stood up to
Subwoofer and Mindflare, and
she has luck on her side."

Alicia of all people
knew this was coming,
for she who lit the spark
of the first world war
foresaw the second.

Poem: "We Are All Related"
Jun. 29th, 2017 08:58 pmThis poem is spillover from the May 2, 2017 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by a prompt from
ng_moonmoth. It also fills the "nurse back to health" square in my 4-3-17 card for the
origfic_bingo fest. This poem has been sponsored by
ng_moonmoth,
janetmiles, and EdorFaus. It belongs to the series Polychrome Heroics and directly follows "The Place Where the Journey Begins," so read that first or this will make no sense.
Warning: This poem contains some intense topics. Highlight to read the warnings, some of which are spoilers. This is hardcore hurt/comfort. By this point the worst is over, but Kenzie has still been beaten up badly and is a mess. There are resource challenges, some difficulties connecting with a doctor/healer, identity confusion, reference to past mistreatment, privacy discussions, cultural entanglements, intimate shamanic discussions, Kenzie beginning to run out of patience with Ben, exploration of the difference between hallucinations and visions, issues surrounding body image and scarring, detailed description of the buffalo skull version of a Sun Dance, necessary minor hair cutting, statement of intent for vigilante justice, intimate description of healing and some messy medical details, homelessness, issues of medical certifications, exhaustion, and other challenges. However, the overall tone is positive and Kenzie is getting good care, so he feels a lot better now than before. If these are sensitive issues for you, please consider your tastes and headspace before reading onward.
