I really appreciate that confirmation. Since my example was from Illinois, I figured it was plausible elsewhere, but I didn't have specific verification.

I suspect that most of what's considered rudeness is an effect of the local customs differing from other people's customs. Within the context of state and city, it seems to work pretty well for people.
