I did draw on my background in massage for this poem. There are systems in the human body that really benefit from it. I figured that in some alien species that might be even more of a factor. A hydrostatic skeleton seemed like something that would require a different kind of maintenance than an bony skeleton, more like the vascular and lymphatic systems. But it's a weight-bearing system in this case, so I figured that the fluid might tend to thicken up over time, the way oil can in a car engine, or certain kinds of hydraulic fluid in other equipment.
