Hambly is very hit-or-miss for me as well, and I picked up the first book with some trepidation -- I wasn't sure I'd be able to deal with the slavery issues -- but it just blew me away. FWIW, the second and third books are the ones that I don't re-read often (personal twitches), but all the others are on my Desert Island list. The integration of the stories with real American history is extremely good.
