Unexplained heat-wave 'hotspots' are popping up across the globe
A striking new phenomenon is emerging: distinct regions are seeing repeated heat waves that are so extreme, they fall far beyond what any model of global warming can predict or explain. A new study provides the first worldwide map of such regions, which show up on every continent except Antarctica like giant, angry skin blotches.
You need chaos math and also a better grasp of meteorology and climate change to understand exactly why and how these things are happening, beyond the obvious "Because of climate change." But you don't need anything near that fancy to spot the patterns as they emerge or to know how to respond. Any area showing hotspot behavior will need to add air conditioning and cooling stations if they don't already have those. Individuals can buy a spare air conditioner and fans to hand out to friends or family in case of equipment failure: an easy way to save lives. Further precautions like free water, free health care for heat-related conditions, and protections for workers against the heat would save even more lives. Check the map on this page to see if you need to take extra action.

Birdfeeding
Nov. 29th, 2024 03:33 pmToday is cloudy and cold. Most of the water stations are frozen.
I fed the birds. I've seen a goldfinch and a male downy woodpecker.
EDIT 11/29/24 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.
I've seen a tufted titmouse, a female cardinal, and a male house finch.

Our theme this time was "Healthy Touch & Nonsexual Intimacies." I wrote from 1:15 PM to 5 AM, so about 13 hours 45 minutes, accounting for breaks. I wrote 3 poems on Tuesday and another 5 later in the week.
Participation was up, with 9 comments on LiveJournal and another 40 on Dreamwidth. A total of 13 people sent prompts. There were no new prompters.
