The October 15, 2024 Bonus Fishbowl on "Quixotic Ideas" has sold out. I actually finished all the writing on Tuesday, too! \o/

The [community profile] crowdfunding Creative Jam ran this past weekend with a theme of "Trees."

There are two open epics at present.

"The Simple Act of Caring" belongs to the Big One. Pips takes care of Bennett and gives him something to think about.

"Babes in the Pineywoods" is now open for microfunding. It belongs to the Big One thread of Polychrome Heroics. When a truck wrecks in rural New Jersey, victims of human trafficking flee into the Pine Barrens.

The weather has been dry here, and mostly mild. Seen at the birdfeeders this week: a large mixed flock of sparrows and house finches, several starlings, at least two tufted titmice, a male and a female cardinal separately, a white-crowned sparrow, a dark-eyed junco, a downy woodpecker, and a fox squirrel. Currently blooming: white Dutch clover, blue lobelia, marigolds, petunias, million bells, snapdragons, red salvia, moss rose, red clover, firecracker plant, pink salvia, double superbells, pink verbena, blue salvia, ice plant, nasturtiums, morning glory, purple echinacea, zinnias, bachelor's button, and frost asters. Tomatoes are ripe. Goldenrods have gone to seed. Harvest is more than half done.

Today is sunny and warm.

I haven't fed the birds yet.  I've seen a flock of house finches.

I spread out the tarp and put another coat of waterproofing on one side of the wagonwheel.

EDIT 10/21/24 -- I fed the birds.  I've seen a titmouse, a male cardinal, a male downy woodpecker, and a bluejay.  When I went outside, though, I heard screaming from at least two directions, so there are still multiple bluejays around.  :D

EDIT 10/21/24 -- I flipped the wagonwheel and sprayed the second side.  That's basically done, except for waiting for it to dry so I can carry it down to the wagonwheel garden.

I coated the plywood chair seat with motor oil, a waterproofing trick suggested by a friend.  It was very easy to do, and I was surprised by how good it looked.  I was expecting dark brown or black, but the wood is an attractive amber gold.  \o/  I'll have to wait for that to soak in thoroughly before I water-test it.

I have seen three bluejays, two titmice, a starling, and a fox squirrel in the forest garden.  The bluejays seem to be favoring the peanuts from the songbird blend birdseed, which nobody else likes except maybe the squirrels, so that's cool.

EDIT 10/21/24 -- I watered the patio plants, picnic table, and septic garden.

I picked two 'Watermelon' tomatoes from the picnic table and one yellow pear tomato from the septic garden.

EDIT 10/21/24 -- I watered the savanna seedlings, prairie notch, white garden, telephone pole garden, and grass patch.

I've seen a bluejay at the fly-through feeder.

EDIT 10/21/24 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

I moved the wagonwheel and the chair.

I've seen a robin in the forest garden.

EDIT 10/21/24 -- I watered the maple garden and the amethyst garden.

I picked up the tarp and bagged it in the trash.  For a disposable item, I got three uses out of it -- the picnic table earlier this summer, the wagonwheel yesterday and today, then the chair today.

As it is now dark, I am done for the night.

Today I waterproofed some things for the yard.  I spread out a plastic tarp to keep things off the grass.
