Hard Things

Life is full of things which are hard or tedious or otherwise unpleasant that need doing anyhow. They help make the world go 'round, they improve skills, and they boost your sense of self-respect. But doing them still kinda sucks. It's all the more difficult to do those things when nobody appreciates it. Happily, blogging allows us to share our accomplishments and pat each other on the back.

What are some of the hard things you've done recently? What are some hard things you haven't gotten to yet, but need to do? Is there anything your online friends could do to make your hard things a little easier?

"Slime Dolls" by reliarobot  is one the most original stories I've read recently.  Biology fans will probably love it.  Doll or robot fans might find it squicky.

Birdfeeding

Today is sunny and warm, a beautiful fall day.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a flock of house finches and what's probably a white-crowned sparrow.

I put out water for the birds and watered a few plants.

EDIT 10/9/24 -- I watered the patio plants, picnic table, and septic garden.

I picked a cherry tomato from the septic garden.  I startled a bird off the sunflower heads, probably a house finch or sparrow.

EDIT 10/9/24 -- I watered the savanna seedlings and the notch in the prairie garden.

Harvesting far to the west of us is raising a great cloud of dust.  Fortunately little of that is reaching our yard.

As it is now dark, I am done for the night.

Hurricanes and Tornadoes

Hurricane Milton is hitting Florida. CNN has live updates here. Catastrophic flooding, severe winds, torrential rain, and power outages are underway. Current windspeeds are 120+ at Category 3. Two major new developments are that the storm is spreading out with at least tropical-force winds over much of the state, and it is spawning tornadoes all over the place. The Sun Sentinel has live storm cameras, for however long they last.
