My mother read me The Hobbit when I was four. I learned how to write hurt-comfort from Master Tolkien. So if you like the way I write -- or the fact that I sometimes still call a museum a "mathom-house" and value food and cheer and song above hoarded gold -- there's one of the strongest roots for it.
