ysabetwordsmith: Cartoon of me in Wordsmith persona (Default)
This story fills a square on my second card for the [community profile] cottoncandy_bingo fest. This fest encourages people to create and share material focused on what is variously called fluff, schmoop, gentle fiction, light reading, comfort reading, positive thinking, chicken soup for the soul, or anything else that offers a fun alternative to usual run of sex, violence, and angst of modern media. I'm hoping to attract some new readers for my writing.

"Drawing the Triangle" takes place in Torn World, a science fantasy shared world. (If you're new to this setting, start here.) Long ago, the world was shattered into isolated fragments of spacetime. Now most of those barriers have fallen, but the marks remain on the people and cultures of today. The Glifai in particular have three sexes -- male, female, and no-gender -- which they celebrate in a dance called the Trefoil. (This story has been submitted to the Canon Board but not approved yet.)

Begin with Part 1, Part 2, Part 3.

Fandom: Original (Torn World by [personal profile] ellenmillion)
Prompt: Consummating the marriage / union

Summary: Omorth, a person of no gender, needs to find a male and a female partner for the Trefoil Dance.
Content Notes: Flangst. Developing relationship. Asexual protagonist. Cuddling. Trust. Commitment to multiple partners. Dance as passion. Performance as consummation.

It really aggravates me when people trademark parts of language that they did not make up, and then abuse said trademark by claiming that it applies to things which are not listed in their paperwork.

This is awesome.  A quickie version could probably be made from a couple packages of orange-roll dough.

[livejournal.com profile] rix_scaedu has written "Gambit Number Three" based on my prompt.  It's a clever little story about disaster relief from The Elf series.

I'm fairly sure this "cube-connected cycles" concept could be useful in Schrodinger's Heroes, but I'm not sure how.

Mountains on Titan are named after the mountains of Middle Earth.  Many of Titan's other features are also named out of various speculative fiction sources.  Just in case you needed more proof that scientists are total geeks.

*glee*  I wanna go adventuring on Doom Mons.

Regarding the Connecticut shooting:

Everyone, please wait at least 24 hours before politicizing a tragedy in any way, regardless of your stance on whatever issues you consider relevant.  For maximum civility, wait until after the funerals.  If you have anything to say before then, keep it to expressions of sympathy or charitable support.  Afterwards ... remember that whatever you think other people should do or believe, you won't make the screen door better by slamming it.

Feel free to copy this if you're getting frustrated by instant arguments elsewhere.

ysabetwordsmith: (Schrodinger's Heroes)
This poem fills a square on my card for the [community profile] hc_bingo fest. This fest encourages the creation of boundary-pushing material that explores what happens when things go horribly wrong and people actually care about each other. Remember, things always go wrong; what matters is how you deal with that. Some of the content may be NSFW. Read the FAQ and rules here. The signup post is here. I'm hoping to attract some new readers.

The following poem belongs to Schrodinger's Heroes, featuring an apocryphal television show supported by an imaginary fandom. It's science fiction about quantum physics and saving the world from alternate dimensions. It features a very mixed cast in terms of ethnicity and sexual orientation. This project developed with input from multiple people, and it's open for everyone to play in. You can read more about the background, the characters, and a bunch of assorted content on the menu page.

Fandom: Original (Schrodinger's Heroes)
Prompt: motion sickness
Medium: poetry
Wordcount: 403
Rating: G
Warnings: None.
Summary: Alex develops a portable device for interdimensional travel. It has drawbacks. Also, trying to explain quantum physics to queasy people is just plain cruel.
