I'm pleased to announce the sale of my story "On the Rocks" to The Lorelei Signal.  This is the first time I've sold a Torn World story off the main site (which is allowed by the shared-world parameters).  I hope that it will attract more folks to investigate the Torn World website.  In this story, Eshra deals with fractious snow-unicorn foals and a fellow herder who is less useful than might be desired.  Watch for "On the Rocks" to appear in the January 2012 issue of The Lorelei Signal and the related print anthology, Mystic Signals.

[personal profile] aldersprig has posted a mid-session list of microfic based on the recent prompts call.  Check out the lovely set of pieces about the lost and found office.

See the superheroes.  My favorite is the tiered one representing all different supers.

[livejournal.com profile] my_partner_doug and I have been talking about serial poetry this past week, and I wanted to raise the topic here on Monday when the most people are active.  These are some of the things I've been thinking about...

So far, I unlocked the donor-perk prompt post so that people could see the prompts that inspired the recent batch of poems in the Fiorenza and Path of the Paladins series.  [livejournal.com profile] my_partner_doug pointed out that, based on what happens during fishbowls, people seem to enjoy reading each other's comments and comparing the initial prompts to the finished poems.  Fair enough.  For future reference, I'll try to remember to unlock donor-perk prompt posts after I've closed the prompting window.  Your feedback on whether this is welcome, and we're on the right track regarding what you like, would be helpful.

Regarding the "Donors" custom group, I've started adding some of my volunteer supporters as well as cash sponsors.  Time is money, and I've got some folks who are taking on important aspects of the project that free up my  time for the stuff that only I can do: writing the poems.  Thank you all.

I've been toying with the idea of bonus material for the poetic series.  This is partly because I've seen some other creators offering such things, and partly because some of the series are getting big enough that I need  to create certain things for organizational reasons -- which I suspect you'd enjoy seeing too.  Likely options include lists of characters, longer character descriptions with reference photos, setting lists, timelines, and collections of reference links.  Some of this is also the kind of material that might wind up the back of a book.  (I already have a publisher interested in The Origami Mage and Monster House.)  Please let me know if any of this appeals, and if so, what kind of stuff you think might be the most fun.

These are some posts from the later part of last week, in case you missed them:
Poem: "From the Free City"
Preconceptions, of Unicorns and Factories
The Comics Women Don't Buy
Read "Winter's Turn"
Poem: "Will Not"
Poem: "Husband by Hand"
Poem: "The Shadow of His Passage"
Update: "The Henchmen's Hitch"
Let Characters Be Themselves

These all relate to Torn World:
Story Sale: "On the Rocks"
Poem: "The Majestic View"
Poem: "Pull Your Ropes"
Muse Fusion is open (listing what I wrote)
Read "On the Road to Inoram" on Torn World

There are five epic poems in microfunding.  Two of these are new, "From the Free City" (Fiorenza) and "Will Not" (Path of the Paladins).  "From the Free City" covers the aftermath of a siege on Fermo as it affects Fiorenza's village.  "Will Not" follows Johan as he contemplates the conflicts of his past and present.  "Restoration" tells how the radiator dragon came to live in Monster House.  "The Accidental Hero" follows Aldornia and Zenobia when one of Aldornia's relatives unexpectedly appears in the Temple of Golden Light.  "Igor's Creature" is a mix of horror and science fiction with a large helping of sociology and a wry twist of humor.  The epic poem "A Periodic Table of Elementals" has been retired for now.  For further details, please see "Let's Talk About Serial Poetry."

Torn World writing update:
Approved as canon: "Squiggles: Excerpts from Nleimen's Journal," "On the Rocks," (fiction).  Back to me for edits: "Catch and Release," (fiction), "Seafoam Fashions," "Hide Away," "Red Glass, Green Glass," "Bitter Herbs" (poetry).  Currently in front of the canon board: nothing.  Drafted: "Cutting Cords and Clasping Hands," "Like Ash Before the Wind," "Breaking the Ice," "From Dark to Bright," "Beached Fish," "The Bones of Need" (fiction) and "The Hearsay Cafe," "The Colors of the Rainbow," "Pull Your Ropes," "Jugglers," "The Majestic View" (poetry).  In revision at home: "Water Dance," "The Green Speech," "When the Wind's Teeth Sing," (fiction).  Currently writing: "Raining Kittens," "Catch of the Day," "Reaching for the Moons" (fiction).

The cooler weather means I can do more work outside, when it's not raining.  I've planted most of the fall bulbs from the current batch, though I still have a few crocus and a bag of tulips to finish.  Harvest is well underway here, with the field corn coming down.

[livejournal.com profile] the_vulture suggested that I remind people of series they may have forgotten about.  This seems like a good opportunity to do a quick overview.  More detailed descriptions, along with links to published poems, appear on the Serial Poetry page.  Also, remember that when I post polls for selecting a series, I usually include one of the less-active ones as an option.  If you're not sure what to prompt for a given theme during a fishbowl, consider checking the Serial Poetry page to see whether any of the series seem like they would intersect that theme in an interesting way.

I've included a poll below about your most favorite series and the ones you enjoy generally.  Everyone is encouraged to vote in it.  (There's a maximum of 15 slots and I have 16 series, so "The Psychic Photographer" didn't fit into two of the questions; if necessary, you can write that one in a comment.)  I would also like to hear what makes a given series your favorite or what you love about the series you are reading, if you want to share more.

I'm hosting a discussion of my serial poetry and have subsequently posted an overview of poetic series that includes a poll about people's favorite ones. The Poetry Fishbowl project has been running for almost four years now, and most of the series listed were generated there. If you want to observe the creator/audience interaction of an established project, now is a good opportunity.

I just finished planting the last of the fall bulbs from the current batch.  I had some leftover crocus after the purple-and-white garden, so I put those in the wildflower garden.  They are botanical crocus: Crocus sieberi ssp sublimus Tricolor.  These are tiny purple crocus with white and yellow centers, and they are fragrant.  I can't wait to meet them come spring.

I also put out the 10 widely assorted tulip bulbs around the barrel garden.  They are various shades and combinations of orange, yellow, red, and pink.  If I get a chance to acquire more bulbs this fall, the next choice will probably be a half-dozen or so mixed hyacinths for the barrel garden.  Maybe something else white to go with the white daffodils my father promised me for the white garden, or any other daffodils for ringing trees.

It's nice that we've had intermittent rain for the last week or so.  That makes the ground much easier to work.  I also appreciate being able to go outside and work without melting in the heat.  I'm doing things like hauling buckets of mulch to put around the trees and various small gardens.

It's nice that we've had intermittent rain for the last week or so.  That makes the ground much easier to work.  I also appreciate being able to go outside and work without melting in the heat.  I'm doing things like hauling buckets of mulch to put around the trees and various small gardens.

[personal profile] clare_dragonfly has posted a call for prompts, with the theme of "herbs."  Ficlets will be at least 300 words, and you can tip for extra length if you wish.  Boosting the signal (while the call is still open) gets you another 50 words.  There are other individual and collective perks for donations too.

I finished submitting the batch of poems from the September Muse Fusion, so those are in front of the Canon Board now.  I'm currently waiting for character approval for the story, "The Bones of Need."
