These are some posts from the later part of last week, in case you missed them:

Review of "From Nature's Patient Hands"
Torn Tongue: Adverbs
Donor Perk: The Triolet Form (locked: Poetry Fishbowl donors only)
List of Unsold Poems from the January 4, 2011 Poetry Fishbowl

Also, "The Words We Say" is getting a lot of attention, with 45 comments. Please remember to treat each other with respect, and remember that you're talking to individuals not representatives of a whole idealogy.

I have listed my Rhysling-eligible poems with links to those visible online. If you belong to the SFPA (or plan to join shortly), please consider nominating or voting for my poetry in the award.  If you need the text or other details for a poem you wish to nominate, just let me know.

One epic is currently open for sponsorship. "A Periodic Table of Elementals" is ahead of production.  This is science fantasy.

I am so excited by this news.  Maybe soon we'll be spotting planets that could really be Earthlike.  It just makes me want to get out there.

NASA's Kepler Mission Discovers Its First Rocky Planet

PASADENA, Calif. -- NASA's Kepler mission confirmed the discovery of its first rocky planet, named Kepler-10b. Measuring 1.4 times the size of Earth, it is the smallest planet ever discovered outside our solar system.

The discovery of this planet, called an exoplanet, is based on more than eight months of data collected by the spacecraft from May 2009 to early January 2010.

For those of you displeased with the hateful, violent discourse that infests politics today -- here is a petition asking politicians and media to speak decently.  I read the text and it seems to be nonpartisan.

Debate, not hate

While we may never know what exactly motivated the shooter inArizona --
and while there are many lessons to draw from this tragedy -- one thing is
clear: Our country must turn away from the culture of violent, hateful
rhetoric that has been pervading our political discourse for too long.

Nearly 200,000 people have signed our "Debate, not hate" petition. It
calls on politicians and the media to stop spreading hateful rhetoric
and implicit appeals to violence. Can you sign the petition today?

And please share this important message on Facebook and Twitter, or just
forward this email.

Thanks for all you do.

Hi all,

Some of you may know this already, but Helen Marshall and I are running this new
reading series in Toronto, which features only speculative literature writers
(both poetry and prose). We run every second Tuesday of the month.

I was intrigued by this piece of astronomy news.

Planck Mission Peels Back Layers of the Universe

PASADENA, Calif. -- The Planck mission released a new data catalogue Tuesday
from initial maps of the entire sky. The catalogue includes thousands of
never-before-seen dusty cocoons where stars are forming, and some of the
most massive clusters of galaxies ever observed. Planck is a European Space
Agency mission with significant contributions from NASA.
