A Swiss bank has discovered that attempting to plug an information leak by shutting down the whole Wikileak website backfired dramatically. Gosh, who would have expected geeks to have backups and create mirror sites all over everywhere and discuss the leak endlessly? *snicker* Censors can be so short-sighted.

There's a wonderfully thoughtful article about Hillary Clinton's speech patterns. It examines the double standards applied to all women in (or seeking) positions of power, explaining how there is no "safe" or "right" approach they can take without being criticized for something.

There's a fascinating article about the bizarre creatures of the Antarctic Ocean. These include critters that look like glass tulips, and giant worms and sea spiders.

However, the discussion of gigantism makes me wonder if oceanographers and archaeologists don't talk to each other: gigantism is common in extremely cold climates because it conserves heat due to the mass:surface area ratio.

[livejournal.com profile] movingfinger graciously directed my attention to Basement Full of Books. This is a site where authors and readers can connect directly. As the title suggests, it's a great way for authors to sell off that case of books they've got sitting around. For readers, it's a chance to put a meaningful chunk of money directly into the hands of the creative people who put the sparkle in the world. It's a little more ex post facto than most cyberfunded creativity, but it has many of the same advantages.
