Nature itself may explain why humans see four pure colors
Humans everywhere seem to agree on something strange: red, yellow, green, and blue feel like pure colors, not blends of anything else.
Now researchers say they’ve finally figured out why the brain insists on exactly these four, offering an answer to a puzzle that’s stumped color scientists for over a century.
This is an interesting angle.
Cultures varied wildly in how many color words they used, but every one of them drew from the same basic set: white, red, yellow, green, blue, and black.
Specifically it goes like this:
* Every culture has at least two color words: black (dark) and white (light).
* If there is a third color, it is red.
* If there is a fourth color, it is either blue or green, or a word that means both.
From there it gets more varied.
So look at the colors.
* Red is largely a danger color -- blood, fire, and some venomous creatures -- but it's also a food color as many edibles turn red when ripe.
* Yellow has a similar span of both danger (e.g. wasps) and food (e.g. bananas).
* Blue is a safe color. It is the sky on a calm day and the water you need to survive.
* Green is another safe color, and also a food color. When the foliage is green, the environment is healthy, not diseased or withering from drought. Many plant foods are green when edible, like most of the leaf and stalk foods.
These are all vital to identify for survival purposes.
On top of that, certain colors behave like true opposites: nobody describes something as reddish-green or bluish-yellow, because in the mind, red and green cancel each other out, as do blue and yellow.
Mostly true, but not completely true.
Irish color vocabulary includes a term for yellow-grey, which can also cover yellow-blue. Not everyone can see it but some people can. One of the easier places to see it is a partly cloudy sky when the sun is low toward the horizon, providing a mix of yellow, blue, and grey shades.
Reddish-green is easiest to see in the leaves of trees that are called "bronze" or "chocolate" and in tomatoes with the same colors. You can see red, green, often brown and/or purple layered together, not quite fully mixed because they come from different parts of the plant.

And what are these extras good for? Yellow-blue or yellow-grey is ideal for gauging weather and water. Reddish-green is another useful in assessing food or threats. But both of them greatly improve the ability to break camouflage, your brain's ability to decode a trying-to-hide prey animal or predator. Same for other extras like being able to see slightly into the infrared or ultraviolet. Those are original uses. Later one, the same abilities made it possible to do stunts like extrapolating which things could be turned into valuable dye, or what color a bulb might bloom from its root color.
Once the researchers isolated just the color signal, they found the eye’s sensitivity to natural hues clusters unevenly around three regions: red most prominently, then yellow-green and blue-green.
Aside from red, nature’s colors tend to be pale and unsaturated, washed-out blue skies, muted yellow-green vegetation, in contrast with more saturated reds found in tree bark, rock, and soil.
Sounds like they didn't check the things that nature designs to stand out from the background: things that are meant to be eaten and things that want you to know they are threats.

Date: 2026-09-04 11:11 am (UTC)I remember a few years back, a man studying languages and when words entered cultures just didn't give a name to the color of the sky to his new child. Finally, when his child was about five, he asked one day, What color is the sky? IIRC, the child looked puzzled, and their word choice was "clear."
I have that article link back in the old computer, but I had so many links and no way to check them if they worked or bounce them, I didn't carry them over. But it was interesting. It also talked about how many cultures had a name for blue or green, but not both. And we see hints of that here.

Date: 2026-09-04 06:29 pm (UTC)Round here the sea is generally green-grey and the rivers are green-brown, and wide lakes are grey unless they are reflecting the sky (or, possibly, the sky is commonly grey!)
So I find it hard to imagine people looking at, say, speedwell or bluetits and going "we're going to call those 'blue' because they are water-coloured!"
There are things in nature that are unquestionably blue, but water as a vital drinking substance isn't one of them...
