We survived the violent weather that swept through central Illinois on Wednesday evening. We are safe. The house and yard are intact. Our electricity was out for about 21 hours. The nearby town of Charleston has been declared a disaster area, but we picked up mail today and while there's visible damage -- trees down, roofs with holes -- it could've been a lot worse.  There were no fatalities reported so we're calling that a win.

However, we've incurred a bunch of extra expenses, including but not limited to:
* A lot of extra driving (with gasoline around $5/gallon)
* Out-of-pocket emergency one-day supply of essential medications
* A hotel room (1 bed, 2 people, 1 night)
* A bunch of meals out
* An extra dumpster

We will have more expenses in the immediate future:
* Replacing at least the minimum refrigerator contents, and more over time
* More extra driving
* More meals out
* Possibly restocking some cleaning supplies

Fortunately, we've been able to cover the expenses so far, but we were already on a tighter budget this month for other reasons. We're down several hundred dollars so far. We could really use some extra funds.

Therefore, I'm throwing a Storm Recovery Poetry Event. It's not a prompt call because I have extra work to do. It's not a sale because we need all the extra funds we can get. I'm just making some new and older stuff available outside the usual events and hoping someone else is more flush than we are right now. Browse options below...

NEW

The following poem is one I finished shortly before the storm. I was planning to hold it for a bit longer, because I wanted to write another poem that related to the 4th of July and was hoping to release their thumbnails together, but circumstances have changed so I'm making this available now. It can be bought whole or microfunded. It was prompted in the March Poetry Fishbowl but has hung around unfinished until recently.

"Energy, Immediacy, and Sense of Place"
Story Date: Tuesday, September 6, 2016

889 lines, Buy It Now = $445

Today's session of Nebraska en Plein Air

OPEN EPICS

There are currently two open epics. One just needs $35 to finish off, the other $151. If you only have a small amount to chip in, either of these is a good place to put that. Every little bit helps.

"Let's Go on This Journey Together" belongs to Polychrome Heroics. It needs $151 to be complete. Linus struggles to deal with a broken arm.

"No Faster or Firmer Friendships" belongs to Polychrome Heroics and needs $35 to be complete. Josué reads a funny poem to Maria-Vera.

BACKSTOCK

I have lots of unsold poems in my backstock. Usually after a poem's event ends, these don't reappear as public offerings until there is a half-price sale in their series, or the Holiday Poetry Sale arrives in December. Now I'm making them available. If you have a favorite series, you can ask me if it has any unsold poems. Same with a favorite topic, but that's more hit-or-miss depending if I can find one somewhere. You could check previous Unsold Poetry lists, but more than a month or two back, a lot of that will probably be sold already, and I don't tend to update those until the end of the year when I'm setting up notes for the holiday sale.  So here are the most recent of those:

Unsold Poems for the June 2, 2026 Poetry Fishbowl (2 left)

Unsold Poems for the May 5, 2026 Poetry Fishbowl (3 left)

Obviously, I'm still running behind on typical poetry tasks. I will get to the theme poll as soon as possible so I can set the July theme, but my next task needs to be starting on fridge cleanup because the house smells faintly of garbage already. :P Don't worry, I have plenty of incense. I will provide more details and updates as I have time. Thank you all for your patience and support.

Oh no!

I'm glad you are all okay, but that still sounds awful. I do have some funds to spare at the moment, so I can help out a bit. I am off to bed shortly though, so I will come back in the morning to do the transfers.

I hope any necessary cleanup and restocking goes well, and you stay safe while dealing with everything.

I'm very glad that you escaped injury and that your damage seems to have been kept to the lengthy power outage. But I'm so sorry your wallet has been involuntarily lightened by dealing with. The summer season of tornadoes and other severe weather appears to have started at least two or three weeks earlier this year. Yay. Even here in Chicago, the wind doesn't seem to want to stop blowing; sometimes just a bit of a susurration and at others some significant gusts. Since we had a small tornado hit our neighborhood in 2020, I've been aware that the city's not completely safe from wind-borne disasters.

Would it be worth checking with your insurance company re: getting reimbursed for some storm expenses? If you'd barely break even with your deductible, probably not, but it may be worth looking in to.
