Poem: Their Hidden Source
Apr. 9th, 2026 10:15 pmThis poem came out of the April 7, 2026 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by a prompt from
siliconshaman. It also fills the "Request" square in my 4-1-26 card for the Flower Fest Bingo. This poem has been sponsored by
janetmiles. It belongs to the series One God's Story of Mid-Life Crisis. It directly follows "Someone Who Was Trying to Be Sober" so read that first or this won't make much sense.
"Their Hidden Source"
Jorsh took his god's tip about
creating nonalcoholic drinks
as a request and set to work.
He wanted something for
himself, of course, but he
also wanted to please Shaeth.
Jorsh experimented with juices
from fruits and vegetables, along
with herbal teas and extracts.
It had to be something special.
Then he discovered that some
of the liquids could be brewed
and become fizzy, without
actually turning into alcohol.
The delicate effervescence
was utterly enchanting.
Jorsh explored all kinds
of different flavorings.
Eventually he settled on
a dark brew made from
sassafras, burdock, birch,
and even a little licorice.
Slowly the roots began
to give up their secrets and
he found a recipe he liked.
Only then did Jorsh make
an offering of it to his god.
"This is good," Shaeth praised.
"This is really good. Well done.
What do you call this drink?"
"I call it root beer," said Jorsh,
"because it comes from roots."
"Do you have other flavors?"
Shaeth said, tipping the mug.
"A few," said Jorsh. "I'm working
on some made from the sap
of birch trees or maple trees."
"Not root beers, then, if they're
made from sap," Shaeth mused.
Jorsh chuckled. "I thought I might
call them soda, because I am
so-done with regular beer."
Shaeth laughed too. "How
did you make this fizzy?"
"It uses yeast like beer,
but doesn't brew as long,
so there's sugar left to make
the soda sweet," said Jorsh.
"And it didn't even need
a miracle," Shaeth observed.
"Miracles happen every day,"
said Jorsh. "They bubble up from
their hidden source, surround us
with opportunities, and disappear."
Shaeth licked the last drops of
sweet brown brew from his mug.
"Yes," he said. "Sometimes
the everyday miracles are best."

Homemade Root Beer
Note that if you don't want to brew with yeast, you can just make the flavor base and mix it with club soda or use a fizzer.
