Hadira Diab -- She has tinted skin, black eyes, and long wavy black hair. She is short and curvy. Her heritage is Syrian. She speaks Arabic and French; she is learning English. She is 26 years old in 2016.
Hadira grew up in Damascus, Syria. She was happily married, but her husband was taken away by soldiers and killed in 2012. After that, she became despondent. Aid workers got Hadira out of the country and sent her to America. There she drifted until friends coaxed her into moving to Rutledge, Vermont. She liked the peaceful town with its beautiful scenery.
Realizing that she needed a way to support herself now, Hadira turned her sewing hobby into a job. First she made modest clothes for herself and other Muslim women. Then she opened a tiny store called Hadira's Hijab Shop where she sold simple dresses, sweaters, skirts, scarves, and other necessities. Most are solid dark colors.
Hadira is beginning to make friends with other women who enjoy sewing and other fibercrafts. Slowly she is regaining her positive emotions, but it's a long road. She likes reading American women's magazines, though; they give her a glimpse of a whole different lifestyle. Hadira prefers Muslim women's wear in dark shades of black, gray, or blue rarely touched with red or pink.
Qualities: Good (+2) Fiber Friends, Good (+2) Practical, Good (+2) Muslim Women's Wear, Good (+2) Visual-Spatial Intelligence, Good (+2) Women's Magazine Fan,
Poor (-2) Widow
Muslim women interpret modesty in a huge variety of ways. Some cover their whole bodies, most leave hands and face free, some will show arms and legs but focus on covering hair, and some don't even cover their hair. Many don't wear makeup or jewelry, but some do. They may prefer drab, solid colors and concealing clothes or the bright colors and patterns of modern fashion. A particular divergence is women who prefer to go unnoticed vs. women who want to express their personality without looking too sexy. Most Muslim women cover their hair and favor loose clothes with medium to long sleeves and skirts or pants. A clothing store for Muslim women may cater to a particular segment of that range or offer more variety of choices. In any case, there is a lot of overlap between modest Muslim clothes and other styles of modest clothes, so women of different groups may visit each other's stores. Explore how to dress modestly.
Héliane Couture -- She has fair skin, brown eyes, and straight chin-length hair streaked in lighter and darker shades of blonde. She is sturdy with shallow curves. She is a lesbian. Her heritage is French-American. She speaks English and French. She is 28 years old in 2016.
Héliane lives in Ville de Roses, a community of Christianisme lyonnais (Christianity of Lyon people) just outside of Rutledge, Vermont. She runs the store La mode paysanne (Peasant Fashion) where she makes and sells practical, mostly modest clothing. Sometimes she brings her wares into Rutledge at the farmer's market or other events. She is friends with many women who enjoy sewing and other fibercrafts.
As a hobby, Héliane enjoys folk dancing. She dresses in practical women's wear, mostly in a vintage palette. Her base colors are gray, white, and denim accented with shades of red, goldenrod, or green. She can't fit into the mainstream but doesn't care.

Dilva -- Traditionally, Kurds do not use surnames. If pestered to provide one, she offers Dimili, the name of her tribe. She has black eyes, toffee skin, and curly dark brown hair to her shoulders. She is tall with a squarish face and a male body that has not yet been adjusted to fit her gender. Her heritage is Kurdish. She speaks Arabic, English, and Kurmanji (Northern Kurdish). She is 25 years old in 2016.
Dilva grew up in Aleppo, Syria and later moved to Bab in what is now Rojava or Western Kurdistan. She often worked with foreign volunteers who sought to improve life for women in the Middle East. When the Syrian Civil War broke out, she feared for her safety. Her contacts helped her escape to Europe in 2012. She shifted to America in 2013 and settled in Westbord, California.
When the Big One hit on May 28, 2016 Dilva's apartment building collapsed. She found a notice from Rutledge, Vermont inviting refugees from the earthquake and particularly those of Syrian background, so that's where she settled when she moved east.

Syria Rojava Map
The Rojava conflict, also known as the Rojava revolution, is a political upheaval and military conflict taking place in Northern Syria, known among Kurdish nationalists as Western Kurdistan or Rojava.
During the Syrian Civil War that began in 2011, a Kurdish-dominated coalition led by the Democratic Union Party as well as some other Kurdish, Arab, Syriac-Assyrian and Turkmen groups have sought to establish a new constitution for the de facto autonomous region, while military wings and allied militias have fought to maintain control of the region. This led to the establishment of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (NES) in 2016.
Supporters of the NES state that the events constitute a social revolution with a prominent role played by women both on the battlefield and within the newly formed political system, as well as the implementation of democratic confederalism, a form of libertarian socialism that emphasizes decentralization, gender equality and the need for local governance through semi-direct democracy.
Jineology, the science of women, or women's science, is a form of feminism, of gender equality, advocated by Abdullah Öcalan, the representative leader of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and the broader Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK) umbrella. From the background of honor-based religious and tribal rules that confine women in Middle East societies, Öcalan said that "a country can't be free unless the women are free", that the level of woman's freedom determines the level of freedom in society at large.
Jineology is a governing ideology and agenda in the Federation of Northern Syria - Rojava.
