1) Splitting or breaking up a large moon changes the gravitational dynamics of the system, especially with regard to things like ocean tides; and it changes the light at night.
2) Rocks fall, everybody dies.
And then, you have the metaphysical factor, a major disruption in energy. That can flip a world from non-magical to magical or vice versa, kind of like how the Great Farting Oxygen Event changed Earth from a reducing atmosphere to an oxidizing atmosphere.
That's the nice thing about this, because the Moon is tidily locked it actually simplifies calculating the impact point. Give it a bit longer so we've got a solid lock when it'll impact, and you could put up a sign saying "future impact crater here".
