Scranton is a large city in Pennsylvania. It has a population just over 76,000.
This is the Carmoody house.
For years, Ferd and Wil were kept in their basement bedroom when not at school. They each have a folding study table with attached chair, but the room is so small that the boys have to keep them folded when not in use.
The kitchen has a small island in the middle. The dining table only has four seats.
The living room includes a couch, loveseat, and easy chair.
The bathroom is part of the utility room with a shower, sink, toilet and washer-dryer set.
The master bedroom has a plain queen-size bed. The "real kids" share a bedroom on the main floor. The boys are 8 and 10.
A Civil War monument rises above the lawn in front of the Lackawanna County Courthouse. Lights decorate trees in front of the courthouse.
The Brooks Building of red stone marks the corner of Spruce & North Washington. The ground floor holds a real estate firm, and the upper floors hold apartments.
Brooks Building
Main Address 432-436 Spruce Street
Side Address 135-139 North Washington Avenue
• The Brooks Building took its name from the J. H. Brooks brokerage firm, which had offices here for many years.
• Built as the Commonwealth Building, it housed the Peoples National Bank from 1906 to 1917.
• The building's design reflects influences of the Chicago School as well as Richardson Romanesque.
• The upper floors are an addition dating to 1910.
Green Ridge is a nice neighborhood with big old houses of 2-3 stories. Most of these are Victorian or Craftsman homes.
Corner lots often hold larger houses like this 3-story Victorian home. These can be big family homes, sharehouses, boarding houses, or bed-and-breakfasts.
Ferd has taken to spray-painting warning signs where needed.
This vacant house started out as single-family, then got converted to a duplex. It serves as a flophouse for the Rag-Tags. The girls use the left side and the boys use the right side. Each unit has a living room, dining room, kitchen, and powder room downstairs plus two bedrooms and a full bathroom upstairs. They share a basement with a few large rooms; they get in through its door and from there to the upstairs units. The windows are covered by thick black paper, and some have blinds, so that nobody can see into the house. It's in the Minooka Neighborhood on Oak Avenue, near the corner of Crane Street.
The cellar door is largely hidden by bushes and vines. The area around the entrance below is cluttered with unattractive junk to discourage anyone else from entering. The back yard is small, but almost entirely overgrown with brush, except for a little clearing of tall grass near the center. This makes it easy for the Rag-Tags to get in and out of their lair without being seen.
Farther back the basement has a common area with sitting clusters and storage. One corner of the basement has a toilet and a laundry sink where the gang members can wash clothes and hang them to dry on clotheslines.
The living room has a sectional couch and coffee table salvaged from furniture put out on the curb.
The battered old dining room table and chairs came out of the basement. Trapdoors in the dining rooms lead to the basement. This one is on the girls' side.
The kitchen on the boys' side is cramped and awkward, because the house's original kitchen was on what became the girls' side. The stove is squeezed into a corner.
The powder room is under the stairs.
Bedroom one has several air mattresses on the floor. This is a flop room for the boys in the gang, currently shared by Dagen, Ferd, and Wil. Bedroom 2 has a card table with computer equipment as well as a mattress. This is Craig's bedroom.
The bathroom includes a toilet, sink, linen cabinet, medicine cabinet, and clawfoot bathtub with shower.
The attic is another common area, set up as a lounge with scavenged furniture.
On the girls' side, the living room has upcycled and scavenged furniture.
The dining room has furniture that was thrown out when a family moved.
This is the house's original kitchen, with nice cabinets around a stove and a farmhouse sink.
The powder room under the stairs has a toilet and a tiny corner sink.
Bedroom one has a mattress, an end table, and a bookcase. This is Javiera's room. Bedroom two has several pallets on the floor. This is a flop room for the girls in the gang, currently shared by Dambi, Treasa, and Triona.
The girls' bathroom has a sink, a toilet, and a bathtub with shower.
