We went up to the Broomcorn Festival. (See the schedule for the rest of the weekend.) Nice weather today, partly sunny and warm with a breeze.
I'm fairly sure that I saw an eagle on the way up. It was too big for a hawk, and the wrong shape and had a head so it wasn't a vulture. :D Silhouetted against the sky, though, I couldn't see coloring.
We started out at American Grill. Not recommended, and watch out for anyone with a sign that says "Tax added at register."
We picked up an apple cider shakeup at a different booth that was pretty good.
My partner Doug got a bottle of Moisturizing Hair & Skin Oil -- pitched as beard oil -- from Rebecca the Red Witch. It's quite nice; the scent is gender-neutral leaning slightly masculine and on the subtle side.
He also picked up a T-shirt for the Broomcorn Festival.
At the Broomcorn Tent we chose a cobweb broom, which is long and round with untrimmed ends. This one has indigo bristles on the outside and natural beige ones on the inside.
We stopped at the panaderia to get a carton of Mexican cookies. <3
Courage Connection is a support center for survivors of domestic violence. In addition to having swag spread all over the table, they had cleverly packed reusable cups with ... let's see, two rectangular fridge magnets, a bigger round magnet, a business card, a big round sticker, and a tube of SPF15 vanilla aloe vera lip balm. Really great lip balm too, definitely pick that up if you see their booth. Bonus points: vanilla is relaxing and mood-boosting. I don't often see folks here using aromatherapy in context, it's usually a separate business, but this is exactly the kind of thing I see in Terramagne. It's ideal for use in emotional first aid kits and perfect for handing out to people who might be having family problems. :D They also had adorable hot-pink rubber duckies, though there wasn't one of those in my cup.
I was impressed by the watercolor art at Woodmiration. Along with some nice landscapes and realistic birds, there were large beetles that had country patterns painted on the wing cases -- like quilt fabric. Very pretty, and a creative bit of cottagecore. The wood collage art was also memorable.
We found a Yooperlite skull at Silver Phoenix Gifts. Under ultraviolet light, this one has lots of orange bits.
My partner Doug picked up a jar of Mountain Man Skrub. It's a salt-based scrub with essential oils, good for removing gunk from your hands. The booth very cleverly had several handwashing stations so folks could try a free sample -- useful at a fair selling all sorts of sticky, drippy junk food.
We got a tub of mixed saltwater taffy from Whispering Pines Farm, the same folks who were at the county fair earlier.
Doug picked up a jar of hot salsa from Layton Sauce Co. The guy there works with people who are crossbreeding new types of peppers. Good idea considering that peppers are a climate-resilient crop fond of hot, dry weather.
On the way out, we stopped and got a funnel cake.
It's been a good day. :D

Date: 2024-09-07 06:22 pm (UTC)Over the last several years, I've seen bald eagles returning to the area -- this used to be part of their range but they were never around when I was little. Over the last several decades, however, Grand Prairie Friends has built up its holdings of nature preserves. Our biggest contiguous piece over 1000 acres, not far from here, near a lake and river. I suspect that's one place the bald eagles are nesting.
