Today we went out to run errands.

We finally got around to visiting Akasha Zamora. (They also have a Facebook page.) They sell a variety of Pagan, hippie, and metaphysical goods. These include crocheted and tie-dyed clothes, lasercut wood items, crystals and polished stones, candles and incense, altar tools, decorative items, and more. The store is Woman Owned and Operated, selling primarily things made by local women. That aspect reminded me very much of Terramagne, a little shop carrying arts and crafts by local artists. They do have a book section too, and some divination decks.

The mandala artist Courtney Dennis was in today, and she does designs on flat rounds, coffee cups, ornaments, and other things. I was tempted by the coffee cups but didn't find a color combination I loved this time. It's a section I'll watch for the future. Of the wall hangings, Doug's favorite was a big purple one with amethyst stones on it, which I also quite liked. My favorite was a smaller one in rich bright blues, but I don't really have a place where that would look good. Maybe the living room. Then there was a very hippie-colored one in shades of purple, yellow, and orange in small size. Huh, that one might work in my office, which is done in fire colors. We also considered a big piece in deep browns and greens that would suit the living room, and a yellow one with mirrors that would go with the dining room. I'm not the biggest fan of yellow as a color, but the dining room is brown and brick red, with some other yellow-to-orange things on the walls. We'd want a mandala with mirrors there because it's where we light candles for rituals, so extra sparkle would be good. I remembered to check when we got home, and there are places we could put those two in the living room and dining room. Not sure about others though. I love mandala art. It's impressive enough on little rocks, but eye-popping at wall hanging size.

Courtney also does paint sculptures with modeling paste and acrylic. The ones she had today were a soft-toned rainbow square done corner-to-corner, and a graytone square with concentric dabs. Really nice texture, if you like the "painterly" kind of art that shows brush strokes or palette knife marks. Remember Shiv and the Paletta Hi-Loft Extra-Stiff? Like that. So this is another category I'll be watching to see if something pops up in colors I love.

I picked up a box of Patchouli Forest incense, which is luscious. We also got a wooden spoon with a lasercut star on it, for stirring the Chinese Dancing Waters bowl. My partner Doug also spotted an ornament with a six-pointed star made mostly of DNA twists, so I got that as a nod to gengineering. I'm not sure where I'll put it, but it's small enough to fit somewhere.

There is also a back room used variously for things like Tarot readings, art classes, and other mystical activities. The store sometimes puts up a booth at central Illinois events -- we found them at a 4/20 event this spring. Well worth watching for.
