ysabetwordsmith: Text -- three weeks for dreamwidth, in pink (three weeks for dreamwidth)

This year in Three Weeks for Dreamwidth, I'll be posting questions from the new 2024 questionnaire that I made. If you like the questions, feel free to follow along. You can post your answers in a comment below, or make a post in your own blog and link to it in a comment.

1) If you could have the attention of the world for one minute, what would you say?

First, assume the position that whatever magic allows you to address everyone on Earth also translates your speech so everyone can understand it.

Second, let's define "one minute" regarding how many words you have.

Speech Length: 1 minute
Slow (100 wpm): 100 words
Average (130 wpm): 130 words
Fast (160 wpm): 160 words

For comparison:

For a page with 1 inch margins, 12 point Times New Roman font, and minimal spacing elements, a good rule of thumb is 500 words for a single spaced page and 250 words for a double spaced page.

So you have roughly half a page of text to beat your point through the thick skulls of 8 billion homs as a captive audience for sixty seconds. Won't this be fun?

Admittedly, I'd be tempted to scream at them about what fuckups they are. That would be gratifying, but not an efficient use of a valuable resource.  I also left out matters of morality, social perspectives, local details, etc. and focused on things that are relatively concrete facts applicable worldwide.  So after mentally skipping over the first four or five drafts -- this is assuming that I have advance warning and can craft a good speech, otherwise they're probably getting a "you utter fuckwits" canned rant -- I might come up with something like this...

You stand on the only habitable place in this solar system: one thing we all have in common. Try to keep it habitable, or you will all die. The Earth will be fine. It's humanity and its civilizations at risk; the size limit for land animals surviving a mass extinction is 50 pounds.

You are part of the living web of life on Earth. If the biosphere is not healthy, you cannot be healthy -- just as, when you have a fever, your thumb cannot be healthy.

The economy cannot conflict with the environment; the economy is a subset of the environment. No environment, no economy. Anything bad for the environment is also bad for the economy.

Natural laws cannot be broken; only human laws can be broken. This is the law that Nature made: Adapt or die.

Everything we depend on is one: one air, one water, one Earth. Protect it as part of yourself, because it is.
