This fits my observations. Anonymity may make some people more inclined to act like assholes, but lack of it certainly doesn't stop people from doing so -- and does harm people who really need anonymity.
I observe that people are just generally meaner, and especially, the places that used to be refuges -- like fandom -- have ceased to be so. That applies both to meatspace and to cyberspace.
