Counterculture hasn't gone away... as you note there's always been freaks. The problem is, lame-stream culture is viciously unfriendly to being a freak nowadays, if they don't try to stomp you out of existence, they co-opt everything about your existence except the spirit of counter-culture and turn it into another variety of blah commercialism.
No, the freaks and counter-culture are still around, we're just running silent nowadays. Stealth mode freaks, for safeties sake.
