Birdfeeding

Today is sunny and warm.

I haven't gone outside yet, but I saw a female cardinal and a small bird that I didn't get a close look at.  The small one was darkish and had flashes of yellow on the tail.  My first thought was a goldfinch but it didn't look quite right for that.  Of Illinois birds with yellow markings, the closest is a female American redstart. 

EDIT 8/27/23 -- I fed the birds.  I've seen more finches, probably house finches, possibly a female goldfinch.

EDIT 8/27/23 -- I picked up sticks in the ritual meadow.

I've seen a fox squirrel on the hopper feeder.

Doesn't almost identifying some bit of nature turn one into a bloodhound? :D

I'm pretty good at identifying birds when I get a clear look at them. When all I catch is a glimpse of one fluttering around, it's hard to get enough distinguishing field marks to be confident of ID.
