I don't. That's why I was so excited to see your list. It's the one thing that frustrates me about DW, it's hard to find fandom. I wish I felt safe on LJ, but I fled from them forever ago. AO3 seemed dafe until earlier this week. I got myself a troll. I had to block her ability to comment. I used to allow people who weren't signed-up on AO3 to comment, but the troll ruined it.

Yeah, they need a better way to find communities. There are some ways but they are not ideal.

Fandom, however, is probably the easiest thing to find on DW as it is among the most active. Options include:

* Subscribe to and regularly check fandomcalendar and fandom_on_dw because almost all fannish events and many other activities get posted there.

* Subscribe to and participate in followfriday. Each week there's a gather post where folks share their favorite communities, blogs, etc. on DW. Topics vary but fandom is popular. You might want to look back through previous weeks in search of favorite topics, especially:

Follow Friday: Fandom J-Z

* dw_community_promo is worth checking occasionally but it doesn't get near enough traffic. I don't think many folks know about it.

* You can use the Interests page to search for blogs and/or communities, but people are poor about listing their Interests and the search engine is dumb as a rock.

twitter_refugees has many resources about finding things on DW. Even though it's aimed at newcomers, if you have a hard time finding something, it's a good place to look. Similarly my "Twitter Exodus" post has resources.

* Certain events make a big spike in activity, which makes it easier to find folks with similar interests. snowflake_challenge is in January. Three Weeks for Dreamwidth starts in just a few days (April 25-May 15). [Bad username or unknown identity: sunshine_challenge"] is in July. If you participate in these, you'll get a chance to meet lots of new people, and you can ask for recommendations about your favorite fandoms or other topics when there are many more people active for best results. Also it's a great time to post fanfic or other content if you want extra attention. Mark these events on your calendar.

Bummer. I've seen AO3 getting rougher over time. Most places have.

Regarding trolls: leave anonymous comments off for about 2 weeks. Then try turning them back on. Most trolls have short attention spans. If they're still bugging you, turn comments back off. Just check periodically to see when it's safe to leave the feature on.

I don't usually get comments from non-AO3 members, so I'll probably just leave as is. I just don't understand trolls.

Many people do. However, very few are willing to do anything about it. When offered ideas for improving current venues in that direction, most people turn hostile. I suspect a lot of them wish for it back without any interesting in working to get it back -- and that is why we have what we have today. Sad.

It's also why, when I see someone actually working the problem, I boost the hell out of that. This is my current favorite:

I don't remember there being an option to fight back on LJ selling to Russia. I left when that happened. I didn't trust LJ having a Russian owned browser.

I didn't give my troll any attention. I figured that would make it worse so I just ignored her and shut down the ability of anyone who wasn't signed-up on AO3 to comment.

Not for average people, but anyone with enough money could've bought it then, and probably could buy it now.

Or people could choose alternative sites, which is what most folks did; Dreamwidth gained a huge piece of the market. It's why I encouraged people to promote this platform every time some other one screws the pooch. We got a good chunk of new folks from Twitter.

Sensible, and fine long-term if you had very little outside traffic.

I don't get a lot of outside traffic on AO3. I get kudos from outside traffic, but very few comments.
